Show THE PEDDLER NUISANCE At this critical stage in the history of our nation it strongly behooves each one of us to stand squarely behind our home institutions, otherwise we may find that we are seriously injuring not only our friends and neighbors, but ourselves as well. We refer to the peddlers infesting our town, taking out money that rightfully belongs to the home merchant the men who are doing their best, spending their time and money to keep the town up to its 'former standard under the most severe handicap known in the history of the country; men who are donating liberally daily to relief of the less fortunate ones of the town, and at the same time find their daily sales being curtailed by people spending their money for goods purchased from peddlers who have no other interest in the town than to get the money and take it out of circulation in this community. True we have an ordinance which requires peddlers to take out a city license before offering their wares for sale. However, in many cases they claim they are simply delivering orders secured in advance, thus evading the license li-cense tax which is not applicable in prohibiting the delivery deliv-ery of goods in the town. Many other slip in with their wares and if no complaint is filed the local town attorney has no way of enforcing the ordinance. Coal, produce, meats and many other commodities are being peddled in this community, and the money leaving town. While a few1 of these fly-by-night merchants have been forced to take out a city license, there are many more who are escaping paying this small sumi to the town's coffers. cof-fers. The only way to combat the evil, is through the loyalty loy-alty of our citizens. Before you buy of a peddler, stop and think if you are justified in sending this money out of town ; if it would not be better to patronize the local dealer who will charge you no more, and who will spend part of the money received in the upkeep of our town ; who will eventually succeed in bringing business, conditions back to normal in our community. Give the peddler a cold shoulder Milford has no need for them. |
