Show TAPPER MEDALS TO TWO BEST GIRL CANNERS IN U. S. Special awards by Senator Arthur ''apper, of silver and bronze m'.'dals i) Ihe two 4-I clul) girls who "cuter Heaver bounty's hi'sl. jars of home canned fruits, vegetables and meats in the National Canning Contest at Shenandoah, Iowa, is announced in .i message to the Tress from Shenandoah, Shenan-doah, Iowa, where the contest is be-uiK be-uiK held under the auspicies of the Household Science Institute. Senator Clapper, long a friend of I he 4-II chilis and a member of the National Committee .on Boys' and Cirls' Club Work, in making the awards said that be honed these awards would serve to encourage home canning work among farm girls and that they would prove of value to 4-H club leaders and extension ex-tension workers in furthering this work. ' The Capper medals are in addi tion to the list of 471) prizes totaling $4,25(1 n cash, loving cups and ribbons rib-bons w ieh will bedistributed to the winners In the contest. The grand sweepstakes award of the contest carries with It a cash prize of six hundred dollars. The contest is open to every wo- j man and girl. There are no restrictions restric-tions as to the nature of the food ( sent. Contestants may enter the fruit, vegetable or meat division, . any two of the.se divisions, or all three. Entries should be sent immediately im-mediately upon canning. These will he kept on exhibition at Shenandoah till the closing of the contest on October Oc-tober 1. The list of contest judges includes live of America's outstanding home economics experts and nutrition au-thorittie8, au-thorittie8, headed by Dr. Louise Stanley, Chief of the Bureau of Home Economics, U. S. Department of Agriculture. That the judging may be thoroughly impartial and the display of jars absolutely uniform, contestants are renuired to send entries In standard glass jars of the quart size. A sample Ball mason jar and carton, together with prize entry labels and full information for entering en-tering may be had without cost by writing the National Canning Contest, Con-test, Shenandoah, Iowa. Any preferred method of canning may be used although it has been found that the hot pack method to-geher to-geher with the use of a pressure cooker for the sterilizing is best, especially es-pecially for non-acid vegetables, states sta-tes Grace Viall Gray, nationally known canning expert who is secretary secre-tary of the contest. This method of canning is recommended by the U. S. Department of Agriculture because be-cause it saves time and fuel and assures as-sures sterility, while preserving the , natural flavor, color, and texture, of " the canned article.. |
