Show Prospects for Another Dairy Enterprise Los Angeles Parties Here Looking For "Calf Farm" In addition to the establishment of the creamery in Milford, another enterprise along the dairy line is being considered that will not only benefit Milford but all of southern Utah. This is the establishment of a "calf farm," where calves from high-grade producing cows may be raised, and whe're this class of animals may be available at all times for dairymen desiring' to increase their herds. This will be the first farm of the kind in Utah, although al-though it is an important industry in California. Climatic conditions condi-tions and quality of feed makes the Milford valley an ideal location for such an enternrise. J. W. Cross, president of the California Cali-fornia Dairy Stock Co., is in Milford looking over the valley with a view of establishing a "calf farm" in this vicinity. vi-cinity. These farms are operated in California to care for calves from high-producing dairy cows, whose milk is too valuable to feed to the offsprings. off-springs. These calves are taken by the calf farm and raised on commercial commerc-ial feed. As soon as they become producing pro-ducing cows they are sold to the dairymen. An advantage in having a calf farm in a dairy community is that the farmers has a market for his well-bred calves as well as being able to add good stock to his dairy herd as his business expands. It will also make a local market for a large quantity quan-tity of feed raised in this valley. We understand there is not another similar farm in the state, and that the only available place to secure dairy cows in quantities is in the Logan section. sec-tion. Thus if a calf farm is established establish-ed here, it would have a large field in Utah in which to dispose of its product, pro-duct, in addition to the California market. Mr. Cross and some of his associates associat-es arrived today for the duel purpose of supplying the local farmers who are engaging in the dairy business, with cows, and also to look over the valley in search of a suitable location for a calf farm1. o |
