Show Galway Urban Council Seeks Historical Relic The mystery that has so long surrounded sur-rounded the disappearance of the niace and sword of the old Galway corporation has been partly solved, says the San Francisco Chronicle. It has been ascertained that the mace was sold by a Jewish dealer in antiques an-tiques for more than $40,000 and afterward aft-erward sold abroad for a much larger Bum. The mace, which is of solid silver, Is of great archeological and sentimental senti-mental value and is being sought for by the Galway urban council, successor succes-sor of the mayor and corporation dissolved dis-solved years ago. It appears that the last mayor kept the mace and sword in lieu of unpaid salary, and his heirs decided to part with them. The dealer who purchased it states that he offered the mace to the Dublin museum before be-fore finally disposing of it. It is said, however, that under an ancient law the mace cannot be sold outside Ireland. |
