Show gLIVE FARM 1 ANIMALS MUST HAVE SALT SUPPLY One ot of the most commonly used mineral elements with live stock and andone andone one with which we are all familiar Is that ot of salt or sodium chloride this material supplying the elements clements sodium so- so diem and chlorine which seem to be necessary for lI live e stock It has bas been beena n a practice with successful stock men for centuries to supply common salt to all kInds ot of live stock and while there Is n a considerable difference In opinion as to the necessity ot of this It ItIs Is considered a good practice and from the experIments that have haye been conducted Is doubtless n a necessary one Salt should not be given to animals In too large amounts as It would Induce induce In- In duce the drinking of at great quantities of water which would lessen digestion digestion diges- diges tion bring about abnormal secretion ot of digestive fluids and other undesirable undesirable able results There Is no question but that salt Improves the palatability ot of certain feeds te ds and probably Increases the appetite In some cases Exhaustive experiments were made b by Babcock and ond Carlyle ot of the WIsconsin Wisconsin WIs- WIs experiment station which proved conclusively that It Is absolutely absolute absolute- ly necessary to supply salt especially to dairy cows as In every case after withholding salt for tor a short time these animals evidenced an abnormal appetite for It Every ery one ot of them reached a poInt where vitality was extremely low and a general breakdown break break- down occurred This occurred In most cases after several months In every case wh whoa n either a potassium or sodium so- so sodium salt containing a chlorine was furnished a complete recovery took place This experiment brought out the tact fact that It was not the sodium but that It was the chlorine that was necessary The amount of salt requIred by anImals anImals an- an will vary ary considerably accordIng according accord accord- Ing to the locality from which the feed is secured Is-secured secured for tor them It will also vary considerably according to the production production tion of the various Individuals ot of the herd The safest and most satisfactory satisfactory tory manner In which to supply salt to live Uve stock Is to allow them access to It at all times and when handled In this way no bad results should toll follow ow It Is s well to keep In mind however that swIne and poultry are very susceptible sus sus- to salt poisoning and for this reason only small amounts should be fed to them In no case should swine or poultry be allowed free access to salt or solutions solutions' ot of brine as this Is Isa isa a dangerous practice Many cases ot of salt poisoning In poultry and swine are reported each year and most ot of them are fatal |
