John "Doug" Smith, Eureka negro ne-gro was captured shortly CMFWYP gro, who slashed 1 18-year-old Edna May with a razon Saturday night, inflicting wounds so severe that the young woman was taken to a Salt Lake hospital for treatment, was captured Monday afternoon in a deserted cabin, four miles south of Topliff, Tooele county. Last Saturday night at Eureka, Smith made an attack on Edna May, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard May, Sr. The girl was bady slashed with a razor across the abdomen, on the arm and on the sideof her neck. A heavy coat collar was probably the only thing that saved her from being kiled. She Is an employee of the Vienna bakery, and left the bakery about 9 o'clock. When only a few blocks from her place of employment, and on the main street, she was grabbed by the burley negro and dragged Into In-to the shadow of a water tank. She screamed, but he put his hand over her mouth and threatened to kill her if she struggled or made a noise He threw her to the ground, and her hand encountered a rock, with which he strruck him in the face. A doctor was caled and the officers notified. The news spread rapidly and within an hour posses were formed and the hunt for the negro began. Meanwhile the doctor had found it necessary to place six stitches in the wounds inflicted In Miss May's body. It was found that the razor had not reached the inner lining of the body. Miss May was taken ta-ken to a Salt Lake hospital Sunday afternoon. Posses, headed by Sheriff Dan Martin, and Marshal Angus McDonald, McDon-ald, pursued their search all night without finding any trace of the negro. ne-gro. The capture was made by Sheriff O. A. Evans, Deputy Sheriff Bert Smith and Marshal Dave Keyes, who had been on the trail since 5 o'clock Monday Morning. The only incident of the capture was that Keyes fired one shot into-the cabin, and demanded de-manded of Smith to surrender. The negro came out with his hands in the air and was immediately handcuffed hand-cuffed by Sheriff Evans. He was unarmed, and was eating an onion at the time of his capture, and said that was all he had eaten since he fled from Eureka Saturday night. Asked why he attacked the girl, Smith said she had struck him with a brick or stone. Further than this he would say nothing except that he admitted slashing the girl with a razor. He denied that he had threatened threat-ened to violate the girl. As soon as the capture was effected, effec-ted, Sheriff Evans and his companions compan-ions started for Tooele, the sheriff stating that owing to the feeling against the negro at Eureka, tie feared fear-ed an attemp might be niade tq lynch him, were he taken back to lodged in the Tooele county jail, but there is a report current to the effect that he will be spirited to the state prison at Salt Lake City, where, he will be safe from mob vlQleuce. A sheepherder advised sheriff Evans that he had seen a negro, answering an-swering the description of Smith, going towards the cabin some hours before and the tip proved ot value to the sheriff, who went direct to the cabin and got his man.
