Vessel Was Forty Miles Off Egyptian Coast When Attacked by Submarine, Subma-rine, No Warning Being Given Those on Board. Rome. The Italian steamer Firenze, 3,973 tons, has been sunk by a submarine. Twenty-seven passengers passen-gers and ninety-six members of the crew were saved. Six passengers and 5fteen of the crew are missing. There were no Americans aboard the Firenze, so . far as .could be learned as a .result of inquiries made at the steamship offices. The Jfirenze was sent to the bottom by means of shell fire off the Egyptian Egyp-tian coast. The Firenze, which was the best and most modern steamer belonging to he Compagnia Maritima and cost $1,000,000, left Syracuse on Tuesday for Alexandria. Forty miles off the Egyptian coast, according to the accounts ac-counts received at Rome, she was bombarded by an Austrian submarine and was obliged .to -halt, when a shot struck her rudder. Five boats were lowered in which to save the passengers and crew, while the submarine, it is declared, continued to bombard .the Firenze until un-til she sank. The passengers comprised nineteen Italians, eleven Bgyptians, two Swiss and one French. |
