Show ORIS HAVE THEIR DAY liUiGRESS NATION-WIDE PROHIBITION A STEP NEARER AS RESULT OF ACTION OF COMMITTEE. Votes to Recommend Adoption of Resolution Res-olution to Submit Constitutional Amendment Forbidding Manufacture Manufac-ture and Sale of Liquor. Washington. The house judiciary committee on Thursday voted to rec ommend adoption of the resolution to submit a constitutional amendment forbidding the manufacture and said of liquor for beverage purposes in the United States. Even the most enthuJ siastic champions pf the amendment had not expected favorable action soj soon from the committee, which at the-last the-last session voted to postpone its conJ sideration indefinitely. Administration leaders, however, doubt that it will reach the senate in time for action this session. Prohibition Prohibi-tion advocates are jubilant and pre-, diet ultimate adoption of the resolui tion and reference of the amendment to the legislatures of the various) states at a much earlier date than! they heretofore had hoped. A two-thirds two-thirds majority in both houses is re quired. , Coincident with the committee's action ac-tion on the amendment, the prohibition issue was brought directly to the attention at-tention of the senate when the Shep. pard bill to prohibit the manufacture and sale of liquor in the District of Columbia became the unfinished business busi-ness to be kept before the senate until un-til disposed of. As an amendment tc this bill, Senator Underwood has proposed pro-posed a referendum to the male voters of the district. Senator Kern of Indiana In-diana has added a proposal that women wo-men also should participate in the referendum. |
