Show TIlE THE DEER I SLAUGHTER By By JOE CITIZEN The deer hunt hunt hunt- perhaps one of the biggest In history history- is now I I I over For those who were able to bring down their bucks it was a a successful one and they are waiting waiting wait wait- ing for tor next year to come so they I Ican can get out into the mountains and chase the elusive stag slag once I more Those who returned empty I handed arc are even more anxious for another try but to some observing sportsmen In this locality it has begun begun begun be be- gun to look like the deer will soon be a semi-extinct semi animal in Tooele Tooele Tooele Too- Too ele County I One deer hunter reported that I he e alone Iol saw aw 14 dead do does s while in the HicKman area another saw I ten A local merchant says that his party was on the receiving end of some wild hunters hunter's shots durIng during during dur dur- ing their opening day hunt Others say there are hunters who will fire at anything that moves the rustling rustling rustling rust rust- ling of a bush a crackling sound in inthe inthe inthe the bush any animal with or without without without with with- out horns Speaking personally this writer observed one man cut I down three does In succession as they came down a ridge I had seen the three and let them go by When they came Into view of this other hunter he open opened d up o on them then seeing them drop went to them one at a time and drug them under a tree Such sportsmanship does not have to be tolerated Had I been able to catch the man I would have found out his name and re reported reported reported re- re ported him but as soon as he saw he was observed he left the area With such people hunting in our county the deer will soon not be beso beso beso so plentiful and even the residents residents residents resi resi- dents h here re will be forced to go elsewhere for their kills A report comes to me of 12 CalIfornia California Cal Cal- hunters who were caught near Winnemucca Ne Nevada ada with 27 21 deer strung up in their camp Brot to court over the matter they were fined apiece their cars and rifles taken and warned never again again a- a gain ain to let such a thing happen This punishment was only what I they deserved and they should have thought of the consequences before they acted as they did 1 Comes now another story the story of a boy who was caught with a spike buck whose horns were Jh inch short The Judge who fined t the e boy told me personally Y that the horns were only 4 inches long missing the lawful five by byone byone byone one half inch The boys boy's story was that the deer had been given to him by a party of hunters who had one extra and that he believed it was a legal kill Whether it was given to the boy or not did he intend to have an illegal deer in his possession when he brought it in At ten feet distance distance distance dis dis- tance who can judge the length of a bucks buck's horns within a half inch There arent aren't very many of ofus ofus ofus us who could and at yards which is the distance from which this particular spike was shot I dont don't hin think any y of us coul could d Then the question comes and It has been discussed by several Tooele sportsmen since it happened happen happen- ed was the boy unjustly fined It ItIs ItIs Itis Is not for Cor us to judge but one thing is certain The next time that hunter has a buck and there is any question as to whether It is legal or not will he bring it In or of leave it to rot Naturally hes he's not going goin to t take ke the chance of oC being fined again so hell he'll leave the deer where it lays and probably shoot another one That's how deer are bein being slowly eradicated ed A fellow told me Several times Ive I've had deer which I was afraid there would be some question about but always Ive I've brought them in and nothIng nothing nothing noth noth- ing was said From now on though Im I'm leaving them lay What about the hunters who brought In Elk that they shot misI mistakenly mistakenly mis mis- Their trial is pending and I though they brought the meat to the game warden and were honest honest honest hon hon- est about everything they will still stand trial We shall wait and see what their penalty will be In Sundays Sunday's Salt Lake Tribune Leyson Leyson Pearsall's Pearsall's column mentioned mention mention- ed a ride to Johnsons Johnson's pass in Tooele Tooele Tooele Too Too- ele County and of the many deer hunters encountered there Maybe a solution would be to close the county to everyone but Tooele County residents and close the state to out of state hunters At any rate it is the general belief that our deer herds are diminishing diminishIng diminishing diminish diminish- ing rapidly Warden Garrard had three deputies deputies deputies dep dep- during the season He should have had 53 Four game wardens cannot be every place at once There were no road blocks in the southern part of the county at all to my knowledge and deer coming coming coming com com- ing out every day If there were road blocks there then there weren't weren't weren't ent any some place else when they were needed A few arrests in each district would do a lot toward helping helping helping help help- ing keep our deer hunters within the law It should be the creed of every sportsman to live up to the regulations regulations
