Show DAIRY BARLEY DARLEY VS CORN FOR DAIRY COWS The 1927 acreage ot of barley In Iowa was considerably larger than that ot of 1926 Reports credited Iowa with acres In an 1126 1020 and on September 1 1 1927 The total production tion In 1927 1921 was nearly twIce that ot of I It Is generally considered that barley Is equal pound for pound to ground corn as a part of ofa ofa a well balanced grain mixture for tor i milk cows In tact fact carefully conducted conducted con con- ducted tests at some somo ot of our expert expert- meat ment stations have corroborated this general assumption Last summer the Michigan expert expert- meat ment station realizing that the barley bar I Iley ley Acreage was In that state conducted another test corn and barley Two tots lots ot of cows cows cows' were ted fed each composed of five Ave head bead Lot 1 was given a grain mIxture ot ottOO or tOO pounds ground corn pounds ground oats and pounds linseed meal Ot Of this the tho cows which were wera Holsteins were fed at the rate ot of one pound for each three and one half pounds ot of milk produced per day In Inthe the way of roughage they were given dally daily one pound of alfalfa hay and three pounds of corn silage per pounds live weIght Lot 2 was ted fed tedi i the same grain miXture except that fin In place of pounds ground corn pounds ot of ground barley was substituted sub sub- o ted fed the mIxture mixture mIx mIx- Lot 1 was corn ture for tor a period of 20 days while lott lot t 2 was waif ted fed the barley mixture for tor tho same samo length ot of time Then the rations ra ra- were switched and lot 1 was fed the barley mixture for a perIod of 20 days while lot 2 was ted fed the corn mixture After summing up the production for tor these perIods the conclusion was reached that barley gave as good re re- 1 pound for tor pound as the corn mixture This test may therefore be con considered as additional evidence of at the tho equalIty In the feeding value of at these two grains for tor milk cows |
