Show LETTER ... Dear Folks: Happy birthday, mother. And I hope you are feeling fine. I am on my way home, but it is going to take a while to get there maybe until about Christmas. We have a high priority list but it doesn't seem to help too much. I am taking my discharge from Fort McArthur, Cal. They claim it is a month faster from there than from Fort Douglas, so I took that as a good deal. I think I'll start school as soon as I get out of the army and take a refresher course so that I will be able to start my freshman year next fall. There wont be much sense in writing because they vill only be returned to you along with the reest of my mail. Well, be patient and I will keep you posted as to events.' Love, Joe. (From I. A. (Joe Western) Dear family, It was good to receive a letter from you thanks for the Chronicle, Chron-icle, it makes me a little homesick home-sick when I read of the boys who are home and out of the service. Once again I have orders to leave Seattle. This time they are ordering me to Charlottesville, Virginia, Vir-ginia, to go to the Army's school of military government, at the U-niversity U-niversity of Virginia. It will last for six weeks. Then they send me to another school. I'll go to Japan as a military civil governor, to take over control of local government after the Army moves on, and until the natives can organize their own government. That includes maintaining main-taining law and order, keeping the people going with medicine, food, clothing and shelter. Also to see that the right people take over the government It will be extremely interesting and I should learn a great deal. I am surprised and somewhat flattered that they chose me for this asignment. You should see the list of qualifications they are looking look-ing for. They have been taking men who were mayors of large cities or big businessmen. I only hope I can cut the mustard. mus-tard. They tell me a person really has to study at this school. I went to church Sunday. I met one of the Boyack boys that lives here. A very pleasant person. We went over to Eremerton on the ferry yesterday. That is a large naval base, and we went over to see all the ships. We went aboard a destroyer a battleship, and aircraft air-craft carrier and others. They had all the ships open to the public. You just can't imagine how large some of those ships are until you go on some. Sorry Floyd hasn't got to come home yet. but he should be getting home soon. All my love, Blaine. (Capt. Blaine Sampson, son of M-S Alonzo Sampson.) |
