Show Advises on Late Planted Gardens . . . It is the last call for planting cucumbers, muskmelons, New Zealand Zea-land spinich, potatoes, watermelons watermel-ons and for setting out plants of Brussel sprouts, celery, egg plant, peeper and tomato. It is just the right time to put in another planting of snap bean, lima beans, collards, sweet corn, kale, leaf lettuce, mustard, parsley, radishes, summer squash, Swiss chard, turnips and plants of broccoli, broc-coli, cabbage and cauliflower. You will note that this list includes all of our main canning crops except peas. Unlil July 1. Lima beans, egg plants, black eyed peas or cow peas, salsify, soy beans, winter squash and tomatoes. Until July 15: Snap beans, cabbage, cab-bage, celery, sweet corn, cucumbers, cucum-bers, parsnips, peppers and summer sum-mer squash. Until August 1: Beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, cauliflow-er, celeriac, Swiss chard, Florence fennel, head lettuce, okra, ruhta-bagas ruhta-bagas and New Zealand spinich. Until August 15: Chinese cab bage, collards, kale, kohlrabi, parsley, par-sley, sorrel, and turnips, and for overwintering: onions From September 1 to 10; for overwintering; endive, head lettuce, let-tuce, mustard and spinich. Until September 15. radishes. Some of these crops will be best if not planted until much later than now. The following crops will do best if not planted before July 15: Chinese cabbage, collards, kale, kohlrabi, parsley, sorrel, turnips, endive and leaf lettuce. Some will do best if not planted until August 15th: Head lettuce radishes and spinich. From our view point it seems Inevitable In-evitable that unless those of us who are able, do plant more, can more and freeze more for our own use, many of us will go hungry for many of the foods we desire. This applies especially in the preserving pre-serving angles, to fruits as well as vegetables. |
