Show Chatter Box Dear Suzy, An armistice has been signed between be-tween Delta and Hinckley, and Fillomre has sent "peace feelers" here to see if they can get back into the good graces and bounds of Millard County after the recent fiasco on the school shuffle deal. I told you last week how tney were going to raise the standards of education ed-ucation here by having all the Jn-nior Jn-nior high school students in Delta and' all the Senior high school students stu-dents in Hinckley have a bus ride. It used to be that people off the railroad brought their kids to some railroad town so they could see the trains and if fortunate, take a ride. Well, with the gas situation as it is many children have not had the opportunity to take a ride in a gas propelled vehicle, so the Board of Education is seeing to it that they include this adventure in the curriculum. The situation has died down to a mere whisper, probably because those who so loudly approvedand or disapproved of the deal have developed a bad case of laryngitis from their vocal efforts. I did a little sleuthing last week to try to to fathom why men, women and boys spend their time dangling angleworms an-gleworms before the unsuspecting eyes of fish. I was especially fortunate for-tunate in selecting the "short wall" at the reservoir for my detective work. During the course of the evening ev-ening while men are men and just sit, I learned that Clyde Maxfield had made a most opportune proposition propo-sition with local garden enthusiasts. enthusi-asts. He will dig up the garden spot for half the angleworms, and said that he was behind on his digging, dig-ging, but not on his fishing. Then Layton Dewsnup and his trio of experts showed up, Stanley, Richard and Gordon (Joe Henry) to do their stint at enticing catfish. They have the system down to a fine art. Layton is left out of the fine working team and the boys of his take over. First they bait up and sail the baits out by the simple sim-ple expedient of having Joe Henry climb the fence to the south of the short wall, holding the angleworm and hook. The caster, Stanley or Richard, counts in slow cadence, 1, 2, and 3. On three, Joe Henry lets go of the hook and the caster makes a cast that places the hook well into the middle of the reservoir. reser-voir. Then the boys settle dowi to a clod fight or start letting family fam-ily skeletons out of the closet, such as the choice item I was able to garner while watching this performance. per-formance. Richard, of champion hog fame, told of the time his father was plowing a ditch on the south forty. It seems that Lay-ton Lay-ton was smoking a pipe and became be-came disgusted with it as he was out of matches and every time he stooped over, the Bull Durham ran out of the pipe like sand. He tossed tos-sed the pipe out in the weeds and went on about his business. Came dinner time and after, and Layton felt the need of a smoke, so he gathered up his brood and spent the afternoon searching the weeds for his pipe. The only reward he offered was a fishing trip to the reservoir, and then when they got there the boys had their justice. They caught catfish by the dozens and Layton went home fishless. It just shows that you must not underestimate the younger generation. gener-ation. Nita Gronning has worked out a most ingenious method of lilling the Red Cross blood bank. - She, as you know.lives at the old Lakeshor farm and has easy access to the fishing. She invites her friends to spend the evening fishing there and then when tliy arrive great clouds of mosquitoes swoop down and start filling their paunches with red corpuscles. About the time they have had their fill Nita gives them a pep talk and they donate do-nate the whole supply to the Red Cross,, provided Nita invites more "suckers" the next night. Nita has the mosquitoes disgorge and wait for larger prey and up to date Nita Ni-ta has been able to supply the Red Cross with so much blood the Red Cross is thinking of putting in a pipe line direct to the farm. The other night a mosquito bit Nita by mistake and Nita was most put out. She stood up and told the assembled mosquitoes, "there's a smart aleck in the crowd and now you will all have to quit." To put - the mosquitoes in place she didn't invite a soul for three nights. Our cosmopolitan population added add-ed a gray hair to Dudley Crafts' head last week. It seems that two Mexicans came to him for advice, and being obliging Mr. Crafts heard or tried to hear, their story. They had a paper filled out in good legal le-gal order with the whereases and therefores in the right places but still they weren't satisfied. They came well prepared and had their little book of "Spanish-English" for the Beginner" in hand with which to carry on a long and interesting in-teresting conversation. After about an hour the book and its translations transla-tions were exhausted, the Mexicans were exhausted, Dudley was perturbed per-turbed and Mrs. Crafts highly so. She reasoned that what they needed need-ed was an understanding on their vital problem, so she gathered 'em up in the car and took them down to Mrs. Songer who speaks Spanish. Span-ish. The problem was solved and everybody happy. The problem was "where is the Newhouse Building Build-ing in Salt Lake?" You don't get that stuff from primers or "Spanish "Span-ish in 10 Easy Lessons." Well, life is just a humdrum existence, ex-istence, and nothing ever happens to us, but if I do hear of anything interesting I'll let you know. Yours for bigger and better family fami-ly skeletons. Toots. Snow on the tops of the Oak City hills on Sunday morning; a cold rain on the Big Flat, but no snow. Very cool for this late in June. |
