Show Prof. Christoi Again. Stories of Man Well Knownin this Vicinity. At two dllTcrent times Luclcn Marc Christoi has beon In Logan giving Instruction In-struction In athletics, boxing, fencing, fenc-ing, etc., his latest visit coming during dur-ing the past winter. Mr. Christoi claimed to havo been champion lightweight light-weight wrestler of tho world at ono time, also an expert fencer. While here he went tin against two expert fencers, Prof. Wilght, of I lie It. Y. C, and an EnglUh army otllccr from Salt Lake. Iloth were oung men, whllo Christoi Is nearlng GO, and they being the real thing with the toils, bested him rather easily. This led somo to believe be-lieve that most of Prof. Chrlstol's representations rep-resentations woto stretched a little, but this Impression was probably Incorrect. In-correct. Tho following which appeared appear-ed In a Pocatello paper Is rather eulogistic of Prof. Christoi, and that part telling of his early life is rather Interesting. The Pocatello Advanco says: "Tho following taken from the Peoria Morning Star published In Peoria 111., may bo of Interest to the friends, patients and pupils of I'tof. Christoi, who Is athletic instiuctor for tho Elks and also conducts a private pri-vate class In boxing, fencing, etc., here In Pocatello. This goes to show the good standing the professor has maintained In other peaces where ho has resided, and that his memory still lives with those with whom ho asso ciated In the times past. Tho Star says; "It was In 1881 that Luclen Maro Christoi and the lato Chas. W. Flynu who subsequently became chief of po-llco po-llco under two administrations, came to this city and Inspired tho wrestling cra.o which was kept alive for somo live years later. These two men gavo tho llrst wrestling wrest-ling exhibition In this city, and they remained here, giving exhibitions In tho old wigwam on North Adams V stieet. They arranged walking matches which were In vogue then and conducted a legularspoitlng business busi-ness in the exhibition line, which Included In-cluded boxing and wrestling. Finally Christoi drifted away and the last heard of him was that ho had been stabbed In Toledo with an Ice pick In tho hands of an infuriated enemy. Ho eventually recovered and went west where ho became physical director direct-or In turn of athletic clubs all along the Pact lie coast. Now lie Is located at Pocatello, Idaho, wheie ho lecent-ly lecent-ly wrestled Tom Davlcsand won. Swung Horses by Teeth. Christoi is now getting to be an old man, as athletics go, but there was a time when ho was champion lightweight light-weight wrestler of the world. He Is Interesting to I'eoilans whose memory runs back somo twenty-four years from tho fact that ho and tho late Charles Flynn gavo the town a lively whirl. Flynn settled here and died horo three years ago, but Christoi, Is still living and Is wrestling with success. suc-cess. Ho Is a French foundling who was raised in a charitable Institution, from which ho was taken by a showman show-man and Instructed In athletic and acrobatic exercises. Ills first cngag-ment cngag-ment In this country was with Ham-urn's Ham-urn's circus when suspended from a trapeso ho swung hoises held by a strap which ho held In his teeth. As an example of physical perfection ho was a remarkable man, and the fact that ho Is still on tho mat attests tho merits of his original physical composition." |
