If thero was one thing upon which Balzac flattered himself moro than another It was his skill In reading character from handwriting. But ho mado a sad mistake on ono occasion. A lady brought him an extract ex-tract from tho exercise book of a 12-j 12-j ear old schoolboy, and asked him for an opinion ns to tho youngster's character char-acter and prospects. Balzac Inquired whether tho child was her own. Answered An-swered In tho negntlve, ho examined tho cxerclso carefully and delivered his Judgmnt. "Madame," he said, "this child Is thick-headed and frivolous. Ho will never como to any good. If ho wero my child I would take him from school and put him to the plow." Then it was explained to the novelist novel-ist that tho specimen on which ho had pronounced so soverely was ono of his own which had been discovered hidden away between the leaves of an old lesson book. |
