The story deals with the life of Kate Walters whose father Is known as "Hill, Engineer of No. 7". Slio falls in love with John Cailton, son of the superintendent, who takes! her away fiom home on a pretense of ' marrying her.and lias performed what' he supposes a mock ccrcmony.through an accomplice of his. Follow Ing events, however, prove that the marriage mar-riage was a legal one, and that the accomplice was not such a fool as he looks Upon the villlan discovering tills fact, lie makes every effort to do away with the life or Kate, and even goes so far as to attempt tho wreck-lug wreck-lug of two trains by a headon collusion, by turning a switch. He does this, fully sware that Kate and her father are on one of the trains, that tho success of his plan will likely result in the death of both of them.
