Show While It Is true that in the south negroes aic frequently lynched, wo believe that In that section of the country there is far less prejudice on the part of the white people than In the North. In the South the negro Is recognized as an important factor-he factor-he has ever occupied a place there that cannot be filled by the white race themselves, nor by any other racc.Thc South does not want to get rid of the colored man, but merely wants him to keep In his place, while in the North, were It not for the law, there would not be even toleration. The lecent riot at Evansvslle, Indiana, proves the truth of the latter assertion, asser-tion, Tor the reeling there Is the same as that In every State noith or the Mason and Dixon line. That such a reeling should exist in the breasts or those who fought, bled and died for the negro's liberty Is, to say the least, slightly peculiar. It may be said that It was the principle for which the Northers fought, but that principle Is not broad enough on their part to protect the negio in the liberty which the sacrlllec or many noble lives brought him. Until the North has cultivated a better reeling ror the negro It can hardly hold up Its hands In horror at what It deems southern outrages. |
