Show NEW DORP'S OLD TAVERN. Built In 1665 and Has Been Continuously Continu-ously Occupied. Somo wtjcks ago nt a meeting of tho board of aldermen It was said by Dorough President Cromwell that Fraunces' tavern was tho oldest hostelry In Greater Now York. There is at least ono much older than Fraunces'. Fraun-ces'. It is tho old "Black Horse" tavern tav-ern nt Now Dorp, S. I. Tho present proprietor is Patrick Curry, who bought tho placo seventeen yonrs ago. This tavern was built In 1CC5, nnd has been doing business nt tho same stand constantly slnco that date. Tho original orig-inal swinging sign representing a black horso was taken down somo years ago when tho Iron rings by which It was suspended had been worn through by constant swinging for over 200 years. Tho sign Is full of bullet holes, whore it has been used as a target nt various timos. Tho outline of the black horso can bo distinguished dis-tinguished only with difficulty, as tho curves of that noble nnlmal havo laded away. Mr. Curry preserves this as a most cherished possession in the sitting room of tho hotel. Tho original crossbeams of tho celling are still vis-iblo vis-iblo In many of tho rooniB. In othors thoy havo been incased with smooth boards, a strango blending of tho modern mod-ern nnd tho ancient. Built beforo the era of machinery, when ovcry kind of timber was most plentiful, and when tho only tools wore tho adze, tho Jack-Baw, Jack-Baw, the hammer and tho piano, this old building at tho crossroads may bo good for at least another century.
