Show TAFT AND HIS COLORED BROTHER t The republican party has always looked upon the negro vote as one of Its permanent assets. It has done much for thc colored race tod In return re-turn the negroes should show their gratitude by always voting for republican repub-lican candidates. Of late years there has been some sign of dissatisfaction among the colored people, but they have absolutely no Inducements to join the democratic party; while In the present presidential candidate they have a strong friend, Mr. Taft Is known not to have approved Roosevelt's Roose-velt's action at Brownsville and only his loyalty to the president keeps him from saying so. Then again Mr. Taft has manfully admitted his error In saying that the negro race Is fit only for Industrial development and not for the higher education. He has twice delivered addresses to the negroes ne-groes of Cincinnati. In the first, given In the negro church on his birthday last summer, he spoke of the ties of sentiment which bound him to the race. lie had had strong personal friends -among them all his lire and his father and grandfather before him. men again, about the middle of last month, he told them what he thought of race barbarism and pointed out that the best way to stamp out mob crimes Is to enforce the law and punish pun-ish guilty officials who persist in disregarding dis-regarding lust Ice. In this he shows the judicial attitude that has come to characterize all his actions and opinions opin-ions and nowhere Is It more timely. "Let the law take its course," Is his maxim and it is a golden one. With him as president we may be sure that all laws existing will be enforced and necessary new ones created. The following fol-lowing quotation from his speech shows how strongly he feels on, mob rule: "I don't know that the race bitterness Is any stronger today to-day than It ever was. For a length of time it seems to be altogether al-together abated, and then there will be an outbreak, a mob will be formed, developing the most fiendish cruelty, manifesting Itself In the blindest and most unreasonable assaults tjpon perfectly Innocent people, simply' because be-cause ot their color. It is only fair to say that such brutish exhibitions are not confined to any one section. It Is Impossible to read accounts or this sort without having one's blood boll with Indignation that there can reside In the human breast such a savage and beastly Impulse and motive." Such are Mr. Tart's feelings. It issafe to say that the solid south will never allow Uryan to make a similar statement. |
