Show Indians with Beards. It has been written over and over again that the North American Indian was always beardless. New light comes from an unearthed letter from Capt, Amos Stoddard, United States Artillery Artil-lery and Engineers, in 1806, to Dr. Mitchell of New London, Conn., In which Stoddard tells of a tribe ot "yellow men, not in the least tawny, who lived near tho lake on the west sldo of the Rocky or Shinning mountains, moun-tains, and who woro their beards, and a great number of whom had red hair on thoir heads." They wero groat experts ex-perts with tho bow and arrow. The lake referred to must have been Flathead Flat-head lake. In northwestern Montana. |
