Show H; HEALTH OF SCHOOL CHILDREN. fl The Inspection of the county school 1 children, which Is now being carried B on by Superintendent McCarrcy and M Dr. F. E. Clark of the stato board, is M revealing many surprising facts which m all should note well who have children B-' of school age or who arc at all Inter- K cstcd In our schools and the health of H) the community. It has been found H so far that about 1ft per cent of the T children have errors of refraction H which need to be corrected by glasses; H nearly 50 per cent of them arc aflllcted H, with enlarged tonsils and adenoid H: growths which often Impair the hear- M ing, But the most remarkable fact M brought out In the Inspection, Is the ' estimate that OS per cent of the school H children have bad teeth, that is, par- B, tially decayed and In need of attention B by a dentist. This fact alone, when PH put with the germ theory of disease J will account for much of the dlph- m theria, tonsllltls and sore throat which BH become epidemic every little while. BB These diseases start in the school B room as a result of pernicious coudi- BB tlons and from these spread all over Bj the community, The acids In the BB' stomach will kill many germs, but Bgi diphtheria germs will live (or six Y months In the mouth ofa healthy in- BBJ dividual and for 1(10 days In dry dust. BBj Dry dust of the school room Is a favoi- BBJ; Ite lodging placu for such germs.' BBfc From there the pupil takes them Into BBj the system where they are often re- BH tallied in decayed teeth until such a By time as tho system becomes so weak BBj that It must succumb to them BB The only remedy Js to keep careful BBJ watch over all nose and throat dlscas- BBl es and decayed teeth of the school BBJ children and to have the school rooms BBjl constantly disinfected. An excellent BBj object lesson In school disinfecting BBf has been given the past week In the BB;, Mendon school houses. This was rei K dcred Imperative by the prevalence of Br diphtheria which keeps breaking out Bh in that little town. The Hours arc BB' oiled to keep down dust. Desks and BB,! blackboards arc washed In antiseptic J solutions, and the school roolns are BBj now absolutely dustless and smell like BBj a doctor's otllcc. PPPM BB Once a school room has been put H into this sanitary condition Janitors BB, should be Instructed how to keep It BB'. ko. He should bo supplied with self- K; oiling brooms for his sweeping and BBi! should daily wipe oil the desks and BB boards with a weaK bichloride solu BB! tion. Then If the children hae their BB-r - tonsils and adenoid growths removed, B their teeth tilled, and their eyes prop- BB erly Qtted with glasses we know of B nothing to hinder the full expansion BBf of their brains. European countries, BB especially Germany and France, look B carefully after the health of their BBj'. school population as an Important BB means of preventing epidemics, and BB wc are glad to see that Supt. McCar- BBj rey and the Dr. Clark are showing us the way to put the schools of Cache county Into a thoroughly hygienic condition. |
