Hen Jerome, the composer of the niusleof "Tho Royal Chef," tho big new Shubert musical comedy which will bo seen at the Thatcher Opera House on October 12th, tells an Interesting Inter-esting story of how ho came to wrjte "Tho Spirit of 7tl" inarch, which Is becoming as famous as any of tho Sousa two-steps. Mr. Jerome Is a thorough American, both In spirit and intent. Mr. Jeromo happened to bo In a town in Illinois one day when tho home regiment; was passing through onparado with a big military band preceding It. "The band played play-ed different national airs of America. I noticed," said Mr. Jerome, In speaking speak-ing of It, "that there was not a tune played by the band which had tho least martial spirit to It. I thought to myself what a great opportunity there for a tine military march, to the air of which the soldier boys could swing themselves along. The need of a proper march number became deeper deep-er Inculculatcd in my mind when tho next day I saw another regiment at a nearby town. I then and there decid-cd decid-cd that I would write tho much needed need-ed march. I went home and for two days I worked and the result was "The Spirit of 70"' march. So that tho soldier boys themselves arc responsible re-sponsible for this melody, to the tunc of which I hope they will often march." Jane Cocoran, an actress rising fast on the ladder of fame, is billed for Logan, October 3rd. Further particulars parti-culars are not obtainable. Chas II. Tin: Kkpuiiuoan notes that tho press generally speaks highly of Luclla Morey who comes hero In "Tho Holy City" Thursday evening. Her work with the Sardou plays In recent years has brought her no little fame, and she is said to excel In this new play. There Is reason to believe that "The Holy City" will bo as It Is advertised adver-tised "a good show " It is presented present-ed foui nights nt tho "Grand" iu Salt Lake. ' A press notice says: "Believing their public to be more Interested In artistic artis-tic production than in tho cost of transporting paraphcnalla, LcComtc aud Flcsher do not advertise "trains of cars," or "tons of scenery," yet for every performance of'Tlio Holy Cltv" theatre stages arc cleared of all that is generally used and the company management provides the scenes that arc so beautiful and so universally extolled. ex-tolled. There Is no band, no day parade, pa-rade, but audiences llnd that night brings evidences of more sumptuous preparations that Is often seen. Miss Morey has never appeared to better advantage ad-vantage and critics agree that of the many stellar roles In which she has appeared ap-peared for tho past ten years, none furnish such opportunity for this gifted young actress as does "The Holy City." |
