Show The Herald on College Question Goes After Smoot-Cutler Machine; Mr. Howell Sends Telegraphic Denial. Sunday's Salt Lake Herald contains a two column, front-page scaro-hcad article exposing a purported plan of the so-called Smoot-Cutler machine to wreck the Agricultural College. The article Is of particular note because be-cause of the new Information It does not present. There has been no time In recent months that those in Cache who have followed the College-University controversey have not fully understood under-stood that at least certain members of the socalled Smoot-Cutler machine were determined not only to oust Pres. Kerr on political grounds, but determined to sadly cripple or destroy the Agricultural College bv any means at their command, as a sort of revenge for various and sundry things hatched up In fertile minds that must needs tind excuse for doing Illegitimate things. The people here have also understood well the plans of pro-cecduro pro-cecduro up to this date, so to most the expose docs not come as anything startling. The Real Point. The point of particular Interest at this time Is that, regardless of desire, the 8-ocalled machine or members of It rather, have not been able to accomplish ac-complish their designs, and are not nearer the desired goal than they were some months ago. The new members of the board of Trustees of the Agricultural College found themselves unable to accomplish accom-plish that for which they were obviously obvi-ously selected, and from advice at hand that wo bellcvo to be absolutely authentic and reliable wc are convinced con-vinced that the plan to-call an extra session of the legislature to consider the college matter docs not meet with the favor of tho dominating forces of the so-called Smoot-Cutler combine. Thus In two points at least those whom the Herald says wopld wreck the college have met defeat. If, as the Herald indicates, tho report of the commission commis-sion appointed to investigate the matter mat-ter reports adversely to the College, then this single point Is gained, but this point is merely preliminary to a great tight that will be waged in the next legislature. Should the so-called machine, or certain members of It, be able to wlu In the legislature' then tho right must go to the people, and Tun Rkpuhmcan has yet to be convinced that for any reason the masses In tills state will go against that Institution which Is of, by and for them above all others. The wrecking of Hie Agricultural College by any political combination Is yet for away, and while Thk Rk-I'Uiir.icAN Rk-I'Uiir.icAN sees need of organized action it sees no cause for alarm. Mr. Howell Denies. There Is one other ray of light at tills time that Is not less welcome than' tho flowers that bloom In tho spring this, a strong denial from Congressman Joseph Howell that ho is a party to any Intrigue or connivance conniv-ance on tho part of the socalled Smoot machine or any combination tiiat has not Its object the Injury of the Agricultural Agricul-tural College of Utah. Tho Herald article contained the following reference refer-ence to Mr. Howell: "Congressman Joseph Howell lives In Cache county, and at llrst hu was inclined to oppose the plan of his associates asso-ciates In tho Smoot machine to wreck tiro Agricultural College. Now, however, how-ever, hi! has abandoned the tight and surrendered hoise, foot and dragoons. He Is convinced that his bono for the futuie lies with the machine, and lie is willing that tho Smoot crowd shall do anything to anybody so long as they don't do It to him. He Is making mak-ing no further protest against the dismantling of the eollege." This and the purport of the Herald article generally was telegraphed to Congressman Howell by U. Bullcn Jr., who received the following reply: Washington, I). 0 .Ifjtie2."i, 00. II. Bullcn, Jr., Logan, Utah. "Herald article ridiculous. If jou deem it advisable can absolutely deny It as far as it relates to me." J 03 K I'll IIowull Supplemental to this Thk Huruni.i-can Huruni.i-can gets the Impression that whatever what-ever we or others may havo felt heretofore here-tofore as to Mr. Howell's real attitude toward dllllcultics at and surrounding the college, lie lias never been a party to aught; that he considered detrimental detrimen-tal to the col I ego Itself, and at this time is so strongly and uncqulvocably against any attempt on the part of any combination to damage tho college, col-lege, that he considers his own political politi-cal future and personal ambitions as secondary matters, and will not permit per-mit them to stand In tho way of his championing the legitimate causes of the Agricultural college. A Final Word. One other word about tiie Herald article may not bo amiss the so-call-Smoot-Cutler combination Is not the Republican party of Utah, and mnjt certainly those members named arc hardly the dominating forces of Republicanism. Re-publicanism. Nor can It be honestly set forth that any great portion and certainly not the Cache end of those who supported the Rcpuollcan ticket twoyearsagoare necessarily adherents of that or any other machine now. It must be remembered that tiie Demo, crats are today, indulging In the fond hope tint the Jackass will down the elephant next fall, and that It Is to the advantage of the Herald and Democracy De-mocracy If they can creato the impression impres-sion tlat tho Republican paiiy seeks to manlpuiato a state educational Institution. It must also be remembered that many of tiie most prominent Democrats Demo-crats of this slate aro lined up against the Agricultural College, and the Herald's hue anO cry about tho Smoot-Cutler Smoot-Cutler machine Is a cry calculated to detract attention from this fact. Line them up, prominent Democrats and Republicans, and It will be found that In Its support of the great state institution insti-tution at Logan, Democracy lias no advantage of those whom its organ npw.berates..i , - ,f There Is much doubt here aitptho real Intent of the Herald article". |
