Show ;j THAT EXTRA SESSION. H '( Thoelfoitsof the consolldatlonlsU HH , to secure an extra session of the legls- yl lature has raised pointed objection! H , from all parts of tho state, even a H I I portion of the Salt Lake press de-' I nounclng this move of President Kingsbury and the University alumni as being illegitimate from every standpoint. Tho country press of the state Is against the move.and It Is now believed that the greater proportion of the strong men of tho stato do not favor the extra session Idea. Among tho public expressions about this matter, mat-ter, an editorial In the Ogden State Journal ranks as a good one and It Is here produced, The Journal says: "The greedy Salt Lakers who want to consolidate the University with the Agricultural college, are already urging urg-ing the necessity of calling a special session of tho legislature for the purpose pur-pose of laying before tho people an amendment to the constitution to be voted on at the coming election. Although Al-though the plea of economy has been urged as a cogent reason for the proposed pro-posed union of the two Institutions, at the same time they are willing, In their eagerness to grab something, to put the state to tho expense of a special session and hasten their chances to destroy a state institution, so long as their own particular locality Is benefited. Tho State Journal urges the governor gover-nor to pay no attention to these demands. de-mands. Thcro Is time enough at tho regular session, which meets this winter, tothrash over this matter. It is folly to put the state to additional addition-al expense, especially when the commission com-mission that urges tho consolidation says It Is "too expensive" to run tho schools separate. At the same time we might suggest to tho denlcns of the town to the south that In their haste In this matter mat-ter they aro to use a slang expression "tipping their hand." Whatever credit for sincerity of purpose they may havo had Is being dissipated by their undue anxiety to hurry matters up and secure the consolidation right away. Wo once more renew our protest against joining the college and the university. We believe In both, but wo also believe that when the two arc merged It means tho destruction of the Agricultural College. The theorists theor-ists who composed the commission to the contrary notwithstanding. If the people arc to vote on tills matter there should be ample time for the discussion of the matter The time between a special session and the election is too short lor the people peo-ple to thdroughly discus? the case and hear both sides. Utah Is a state of vast expanse, and In the remote portions por-tions Information travels slowly. Give us a show to dissect the question fairly and honestly. ' Salt Lake Is not acting right in this matter, and knows she Is not, as witness wit-ness the hurry manifested to have it over and done with ero the people have an opportunity to think out what Is tho best plan to pursue. |
