Whether tho Northwestern Is coming com-ing Is a matter of conjecture even yet, of course, and whether this reported move of the Northwestern Is what the above mentioned olllclal had in mind Tiik Rki'uiimcan Is not prepared pre-pared to say, but the Descret News, which gets its Information from a letter written to a gentleman In Salt Lake city, sas It can can vouches for the writer as knowing whereof he writes, and this letter says tho Northwestern North-western Is coming sure. While there are a fow copies of the dally News circulated in this valley, wc believe this railroad talk will prove new to the great majority of our readers, so we reproduce the article In the News, as follows; "A letter received in tills cit from St. Anthony this morning throws considerable light on recent mysterious myster-ious movements in northeastern Idaho onthepaitof railroad surveyors, officials of-ficials ol the Oregon Short Line and Individuals seeking options on land generally The story told is one of the contemplated Invasion of Short Line territory on the part of the Chicago & Noithwcstcrn and Us extension ex-tension on to Ogden and Salt Lake, taking In the towns of Sugar City, Rexburg, Rigby, lllackfoot, Preston, Logan, Wellsville and llrigham City en route. In addition the toad will be pushed due west from St. Anthony on to Boise, Ida. The letter Is written writ-ten by a gentleman whose reliability the "News" vouches for. In the face of the tact that General Manager W. II. Bancroft and General Superintendent Superin-tendent K. Buckingham of the Ore gon Short Line aie today at Marys-vlllc Marys-vlllc tiolng over the situation and orders' or-ders' have been given to rush the work on the Yellowstone 1'ark railroad, rail-road, It would appear that the Short Line is awaio of the contemplated invasion in-vasion of the territory. In Snake River Valley. The "News" reproduces a part uf the letter which is as follows: ''The most Important news for the Snake River valley and in fact for northern Utah and southern Idaho is the fact that the Chicago & North- western railway has practically laid out Its route from Its western terminal to Ogden and Salt Lake city. Tho Northwestern people have worked with the utmost secrecy and It has Just leaked out for the first time that it contemplated such a big move In the railroad extension of the west. Right or Way Secured. "Right or way has been secured to the Idaho line. Large tracts or coal lands have been bought up in the Jackson Hole country and land west of tho Teton mountains Is being secured se-cured by the agents or this road; this was all looked upon as certain indications indica-tions or the Snake River valley obtaining ob-taining a tuink line, but now comes the assurances that these long-hoped-for Improvements will inutcrla.lle. Tho activity of the Rio Grande at Ogden In increasing Us depot area and improvements had a significance that has not been hitherto fully understood. un-derstood. 'Tho news Is that the Chicago & Northwestern will extend through the Jackson Hole country, coming through St. Anthony via Marysvllle and continuing its main line through southwest, touching Sugar City, Rexburg, Rex-burg, Rigby, aud most probably passing pas-sing somewhat to the east of Idaho Falls, thus taking in the large villages vil-lages in that direction and opening up anew portion of the Snake river valley. val-ley. The main object in doing this, however, Is to make a more direct and Quicker route to Ogden and Salt Lake city. Into Cache Valley. "From lieie the road's plans are to take a little west of south course, touching BlucUloot and many of the large hamlets east of the Short Line track. From Pocatello the course lies a little cast of the Short Line toutc, thus throwing It Into Cache Valley without any perceptible Increase of distance, as was the case with the Short Line In former years. From Preston the road intends paralleling tho Short Line branch to Logan. Logan Lo-gan and Cache valley will be given special attention. From Logan there area number of routes planned and under advisement, but tho one looked upon as the most feasible at present is from Logan to Wellsville and through Wellsville and Brlgham can.ons and from Brlgham city a little to the east of the Short Line, touching the towns of Wlllard, Hot Springs View, North Ogden and then Into Ogden, wheie connection will be made with the Rio Grande and other roads Through Ogden Canyon. 'Another route tinder consideration is liom Logan through Newton, Providence, Paradise and thence Into Ogden valley and then tluough scenic Ogden canyon to Ogden. Tho road will then eventually reach Salt Lake city. " 1 he road Is to branch at St. An-thony An-thony and a branch will extend tluough the rich Elgin bench country, thus tapping one of tho most fertile spots of Idaho. This branch will In time reach Boise and may extend on to the coast. "This Is the first news of this great developing of this intermountaln part or the country. It will do more for the advancement and progress of this great coming country than anything j else that has happend. People here arc feeling highly elated. It means railroad shops and a central railroad spot for St. Anthony and prosperity for all contiguous territory." Jt J |
