Show Zi s ar prove Tl e Frotest. Washington, March 6. The Presbyterian Ministerial association associ-ation of this city has declined to id the Salt Lake Ministerial association as-sociation in its tight against Senator Sen-ator Smoot. . A prominent Presbyterian Pres-byterian minister has Trritten a letter to one o.f Smoot's friends m which he says: ,;The pi otest of the Salt Lake association was presented to us for consideration and appoval. The subject was generally discussed dis-cussed and the sentiment of our association was. emphatically that Smoot's relation to the Mormon Mor-mon church could be no barrkr to his admission to the Ucited States senate. "That he has just as much right to that position as a high official of any other church, and it is a matter of history that ministers and bishops of other churches have aspi -ed to hold high pub1 lc office. The protest concedes that neither polygamy nor any other form of lawlessness could bechaiged against Smoot, and for that reason we could not see our way to endorse the protest pro-test of the Salt Lake Ministerial association." ',' - This It-tier will be presented to Senator .Smoot foe his use. if he deems it necessary, with the committee on p-v.legesanu e'ec tions. The writer of the ' letter does not think seriously of Rev. Lee ch's charge of polygamy against Smoot, and ' his charge wi'l not affect the attitude o? the ! ministerial association. i |
