Show j SIR OLIVER MOWAT DEAD. 'Ztfc'a' Vnaffi.w. Seaman . passei Away at Ottawa. Sir Oliver Mowat, lieutenant governor gover-nor of Ontario, died April 19 at government govern-ment house, Ottawa. He was 83 years old. He had been in feeble health for some time. Sir Oliver was premier of Ontario from 1872 to 1896, twenty-four years, thus earning the distinction of having had the longest continuous term of office as premier ever accorded to any man by the people of any province prov-ince or colony in the British empire. He was born in Kingston In 1820 and was of Scottish descent. . At the age of 22 he was called to the bar and became one of the foremost lawyers in Canada. He entered parliament in 1857, was postmaster general in 1863-4, and from November, 1864, until October, Octo-ber, 1872, was vice chancellor of upper' up-per' Canada. Entering the legislature at this time, he became premier and attorney general for the province of Ontario, which position he held until Sir Wilfrid Laurier Became premier of Canada, when he was made minister of justice in the dominion cabinet. which office he held until appointed lieutenant governor. At the jubilee celebration he was knighted by the queen. |
