Show SIX MEN KILLED. Huge Explosion in Illinois. ! Springfield, 111., March 23. A teirific explosion in the mine y the Athens Coal- company Athens, Menard county, twenty miles north of Springfield, todsy resulted in the death c.f six men, who were badly mangied, anai one being seriously injured. Ttu-1 dead are: John Roberts, Fred Impeks. S. B. Corncorff, James Patrick, August Noel, David Myers. My-ers. The inured: Carl Jcerjnich. I An entry in the mine has been for some time stopped up on ac-connt ac-connt of gas, and this morning an attempt was made .to open it by drilling another entry in order or-der to allow air to enter and the gas to escape. nue cuoo,, in this work a miner fired through to the stopped up chamber, causing a terrific explosion ex-plosion of gas which had accum- ulated in the chamber. Nin? men were in the mine at the time, and as a result of the ex-1 plosion six were killed outwright! and Joerjnich was badly injured. Two men escaped. Some of the men killed were 100 feet away from where the exp.osion oc-cured. |
