Show FAILED TO OBEY ORDERS. Twenty-four People Meet Death Through Carelessness of Engineer. Twenty-four persons were killed and thirteen injured in a head-on collision col-lision on the Virginia Midland division divi-sion of the Southern railway at Rock-fish, Rock-fish, Va., Tuesday afternoon. The passenger train which left Washington at 11:15 a. m. for Atlanta, Atlan-ta, Ga., dashed into a local - freight which was standing on the main line of the road at that point, wrecking both engines and the baggage and express ex-press cars of the passenger train. The freight train was in charge of Conductor Brubeck and Engineer Hale. i . - Engineer Kale hacTof defj; of the way of the fast passenger train, but for some reason which has ncfe yet been explained he had overstayed his time and had failed to take a siding sid-ing so that the passenger train could pass. ' It is now said to be almost certain that of those killed nineteen were colored col-ored persons, as the second-class coach, which was telescoped! was occupied oc-cupied almost exclusively by them. |
