Show HOME-GROWN EASTER LILIES Experlmente Made by the United States Department of Agriculture Have Been Successful. When It first beenmo known that experiments ex-periments In raising Easter lilies from seed were bolng carried on by the Department De-partment of Agriculture, fow florists wero prepared to believo thnt tho undertaking possessed nny commercial value beyond the possibilities of producing pro-ducing new hybrids. The results of these experiments, which havo now been carried on for four years, Indicate, Indi-cate, tho department specialists bellove, be-llove, that this country can develop an Important Industry. On tho Arlington experimental farm, which Is Just across the Potomac river from Washington, department specialists special-ists produce the Illy seeds In greenhouses green-houses by artlflolnl pollination. Thcso seed are planted nbout Junuary 1, pricked out Into small pots, nnd in Mny the young plants nro set In'tho open ground. They dovclop rapidly, nnd by July or August some of the plants reach sufficient size to bear blooms. In October or Novepibcr the Amerlean-Qrown Lilies. plants nro lifted, potted, and removed to tho greenhouse. Without tinduo forcing the plants will como Into full bloom the following February to April 15 months after tho seed hnv been planted.
