President Heber J. Grant, at the recent Conference spoke on the beet sugar indus- ? lV I try, and he made a personal appeal to every farmer, whose conditions made it possible, mm I to grow some sugar beets, even those who, in beet growing districts, have not, hereto- ' WW I fore, grown this crop. He quoted the following editorial from the Improvement Era: II I "For Sugar Companies of Utah and Idaho, during the season of 1921 16,000 farm- II I era delivered from 160,000 acres, approximately 1,600,'600'tpns of beets, from which, up- II I wards of 4,000,000 bags of sugar were manufactured, .which when sold, will amount to I I - approximately $18,000,000.00 this being distributed about one half to the farmers and I 1 the other half to the workmen and manufacturers for.jmaterial. I I The betiefits derived from the circulation of this' vast sum, of money during this I . ' period of financial distress, are of inestimable value. Had this1 financing not been accom- I plished, business concerns throughout this section would have been shaken to their very I foundations. ' ' I To produce this $18,000,000.00 resulting from;i60,00O. acres, it would'take 1,000,000 ' 1 . acres of grain or 1,500,000 acres of alfalfa at the present prices. H Therefore, the sugar beet crop has" produced j in the gross, five or six times at least 1 -as much per acre as other standard crops of this section." The above estimates were made prior to the issuance of, the annual bulletin of the I . United States Department of Agriculture and; the State Statistician' of Utah.. Their . " I estimates of Utah crops for 1921 show the f ollpwing figures: . , I 1 j H , . . . In the main, however, these official! figures confirm the estimates previously H made. ) The Commissioner of Agriculture of the State of Utali recently estimated that ' I there were 500,000 tons of hay on hand in Utah still unsold. To grow this quantity of I hay, it would take approximately 200,000 acres of land which, so far, has" paid no re- I ,. - turns for land or labor. - M If only 40,000 of this 200,000 acres had been diverted to sugar beets in Utah and I ' Idaho, there would have been an additional 400,000 tons of beets, making 1,00'OjOOO l I additional bags of sugar, which would have brought returns to the' community; ' ' ' H There is no intention on the part of the sugar industry to discourage the growing M of wheat, hay or other crops in proper proportion to take care of markets and soil m . .conditions. However, the sugar beet industry deserves your support, Mr. Farmer What it did for 16000'farmers last year, it will do for you: and your, cpmmunity. You ' n need on your farm, this cash circulation provided by this crop alone.' , m r Accept Wise Counsel! i Grow Sugar Beets! : 1 v j ' mm (Paid.
