Hut the storm of opposition raised was so great he withdrew his proposal. Tho elections of 1889 found him moro in favor with tho people than ho had ever been before. His majority over his monarchist opponent was a pho-nomenally pho-nomenally largo ono. Three years later ho took ofllco under the thon ministry min-istry ot M. Illbot and succeeded him six months later. Ho Is a 'man ot broad mind and great physical courago.
