Show A Slameto Twin (Iruirtli. A curious freak of nature has recently re-cently been discovered on Goat island, at Niagara Falls. It is no less than two trees of tho Siamese Twin pattern, which have been attracting attention In various parts of tho country. The connecting limb between the two trees on Goat Island Is believed to be the longest connection of the kind .yet found, and It Is very much of a novelty. The two trees connected aro red cedars. ce-dars. The larger of the two trees Is about forty feet high, and about two feet from tho base, where the troo Is thirty-nine and one-half Indies In circumference, cir-cumference, the connecting limb shoots out. At the point where tho branch leaves the larger tree It Is six Inches In circumference. At a distance ot thirty Inches from the larger tree the branch passes through a crotch In a white birch tree, which Is fifty-seven Inches In circumference Just below the crotch. In height the birch Is taller than tho cedars surrounding lt. Then the course of the connecting branch inclines downward and connects with the second cedar about a foot from Its base. The length of tho branch Is nine feet und one Inch. It Is four and three-quarter Inches In clrcumtorcnco at the birch treo and seven Inches in clrcumterenco whero it Joins the second sec-ond tree. This second tree Is twenty-seven twenty-seven Inches In circumference and about thirty feet high. Two other tree' spring from the same root, one o. which is nineteen Inches In circumference, circum-ference, the other fourteen Intiies. There Is nothing to tell from hlin treo the branch first sprung, hut lt seems clear that It originally Blurted from the larger tree, passer! through the crotch ot the birch, whon nil the trees were young, and In romo manner formed a union with tbe second tree, but the Junction of the limb with tbe two trees Is very similar. Tho size ot all tho trees Is evidence that the strange connection between the two trees Is one many years old, and tho size and height of the respective parts ot tho old birch tell the samo story. Tho trees and the limb connecting them are alive, as Is s-.'en by tho growth of the limb betwoen the birch and the big cedar. This strange connection between be-tween tb.o trees Is considered such a wonder'.ul freak of nature that Supt. Welch ot tho stato reservation, ot whlcU Goat Island Is a part, w(U be ask A to take special palno to preserve It Its location on tbe Inland is such r jat possibly few would be ablo to find ,t without a friend to point it out to them, as ono might pass lt many times nd not discover the relations ot tho trees. |
