Cardlnol Gibbons, Gib-bons, in behalf of hlmsolf and the archbishops of tho Catholic church in America, has submitted a petition to congress, asking that tho question of tho contract school system to bo ro-opened, ro-opened, and that congress again go over tho whole subject of Indian education. edu-cation. The petition sots forth at length tho history of the Indian school question and tho legislation applying to it, up to tho recent provisions In appropriation ap-propriation bills, looking to tlio gradual grad-ual discontinuance of government aid to sectarian schools. Tho petitioner asks that a congressional congres-sional inquiry bo made In placo of tho departmental inquiries, In order that the merits and defects of contract schools and government schools may bo shown, and "not kept ns a secret of state, concealed In tho flics of any do partment or bureau." Representative Sherman, chairman of tho house commltto on Indian affairs, af-fairs, Is In favor of granting tho prayer that an investigation bo mado. IIo is of tho opinion that as tho Catholic church has made large expenditures for Indian education in tho erection of buildings, etc., It is fair that congress thould know tho exact condition of shlng. Mr. Sherman said today that ho would probably tako some action to brig nbout such an Investigation, but not for somo tlmo yet. |
