Show Sugarahd Annexation. The report comes from an apparently f reliable source in Honolulu that the spreckols and sugar trust interests have Made advances to the Hawaiian govern. , ment looking toward a harmonious agreement on tho subject of annexation. This marked chunge of front on tho part of the sugar barons is thought to be duo to a disposition to accept tho inevitable I in tho form of annexation, and in some I measure to the hard blow dealt in their I interest to the granting of a Hawaiian I register to the Pacific Hail steamship I China,, with the probability that at least I two more of that company's steamers I , will fly the Hawaiinn flag beforo next I December. There are other potent factors, too, which seem to indicate that I tho local government has steadily gained I the upper hand of Spreckels in the long and bitter fight, during which it threatened to put an end to his com-I com-I mercial monopoly of the islands. I It comes from an excellent source that I ' the Hawaiian government is more thnn I -willing to meet SpreckelB half way. I Exactly what reply will bo mado to tho I sugar King's proposition can not bo learned, but it is understood that a treaty of peace between Spreckels arid tho iuland people are being drawn up, and will, doubtless, be signed and H executed beforo congress meets again. H If this is succesifully accomplished H Spreckels will continue to control tho H trade of tho islands. N. Y. Shipping I list. |
