Show QUEEN WILHELMINA'S JOKE. Her Majesty of Holland Han Some Fun at the Expense of ITer Governess. Tho Figaro tells a ruther amusing story about tho twelve-year-old young Queen Wilhclmina of Holland, prefacing prefac-ing its narration by tho statement that the alarming news which was circulated circu-lated concerning tho health of her majesty in August last is quite unconfirmed, uncon-firmed, "and saying that the story in question is proof of tho good spirits of the young queen. Tho governess of her majesty, an English lady, Miss Saxton Winter, had given the little queen, as an extra task, the drawing and coloring of a map of Europe because she had not known her lesson in Turkish and Chinese geography geogra-phy as well as the governess deemed she ought to have done. Tho queen agreed to do tho extra task imposed upon her, saying: "Very well; I will do tho map, because I meant to bo obedient. obe-dient. But you will sec." In duo course tho map was drawn and colored and handed to tho governess. gover-ness. Tho young queen had xnndo tho British Isles very small, about the sizo of tho Balearic islands, and had covered cov-ered them with "London fog" colored paint. But Holland, on tho contrary, was of enormous sizo, occupying a largo part of that space which in ordinary ordi-nary maps is sea. This immonso tract of hind was glorified in the most brilliant bril-liant colors. Miss Saxton Winter laughed. Tho young queen was delighted de-lighted with her joke and tho map was passed round the court. |
