G Roylance's subject at a public lecture delivered last night in Barratt hall This was the second in ina ina a a series of nine war lectures which will be given the University sors SOls It was at first planned to hold the lectures on the campus but for the convenience of the public it has been beep decided to use Barratt hall for the tho thorest rest of the series In his discussion last night Professor sor SOl Roylance recounted the events and conditions immediately preceding and leading up to the war In substance his liis lecture was as follows On the the twenty-eighth twenty day of last June the Grand Duke Duke of Austria and heir to the Austrian throne was assassinated assassinated assassinated as as- by of Bosnia Bosma From this event a train of diplomatic maneuvers leads directly to the present present present pres pres- ent war But throughout the world this particular event is almost forgotten forgotten forgot forgot- t ten n partly because since its happening happen happen- ing Europe has in a day sunk into the most awful abyss of strife that ever has engulfed humanity but also partly partly partly part part- ly because we have learned to look beneath the surface of events for the thereal thereal thereal real causes determining great world movements Rightly that murder a single isolated horror has sunk into insignificance ce in the thought of the civilized world The The present war is a conflict of I world forces It was not begun nor noris noris is it controlled by single men or classes of men There are it is true certain exceptional personalities personalities Wil Wilhelm Wil- Wil helm II von VOIl Moltke Lord Grey Kitchener Kitchener Kit Kit- chener J Joffre and the heroic young king of Belgium through Belgium through whom these forces find expression but the war would have come in the absence of any anyone one or all of these and doubtless would have been fought out to much Ithe the same conclusion The leaders and the classes to which they belong have their purposes doubtless but leaders classes and their purposes are all products and agencies of those great forces now in mortal conflict Our search for the nearer as far faras faras faras as the remoter causes of the European conflict leads not along the devious paths of diplomatic or even of political political political ical history merely but along the broad course of human progress in its larger meaning We go back to the I time when Germany conscious of the value of its newly achieved unity grown through its wise and skillful use of its internal resources acutely conscious of its power an ethnic nation nation nation na na- na- na tion in a modern world began its career of expansion Five possible methods of expansion were within the choice of Germany migration harmonize with German patriotism as Prince Henry the Kaisers Kaiser's brother explained explain explain- ed to us here in America several years years years' ago Therefore Germany wanted colonies colonies colonies col col- col- col onies and for like reasons she wanted wanted wanted want want- ed a world commerce and to have a wor world d commerce she conceived that she must have at least a part in the control of the tle seas the great highways highways highways high high- ways of world commerce As the Kaiser expressed it she wanted a place in the sun I I Germany Germany tried to acquire colonies by diplomacy by bluff by threat of war but for one or another reason always failed Then she began building building build build- ing a navy conceiving that her future future fu fu- fu ture lay upon the water and that she must at least be able to check England's England's Eng Eng- I lands land's dominance of the sea Her leaders tried to isolate England by drawing Russia to the side of Germany Germany Germany Ger Ger- many with the lure of Germanys Germany's aid to Russia in gaining control of the far East German diplomats even flirted with France trying to get her in into to a central European alliance that might stop the game of both ends against the middle in European politics They made use of the old triple alliance alliance alliance al al- al- al liance fomented strife in the Balkans and played fast and loose with Turkey in the furtherance of a really brilliant scheme to break through the Mediterranean Mediterranean Mediterranean trade routes route and establish direct direct direct di di- trade connections between Germany Germany Germany Ger Ger- many and Asia In all these attempts the Kaiser and his diplomats failed though all the while he was building up his gigantic military power and shaking his huge mailed fist in the faces of his neighbors And all the while the German people people peo peo- pIe were pouring their treasure into the Kaisers Kaiser's huge war chest They were taxing taxing taxing till finally the entire nation became conscious that it could pay no more It was a deadlock The resources of the nation nation nation na na- na- na tion were inadequate to the nations nation's lack of acquiring more resources Theone Theone The Theone one possible solution was war |
