Show MISS KATE THOMAS one of the associate editors of the CHRONICLE has resigned her position with this number number number num num- ber and is no longer a member of the fhe k For two years past Miss Thomas Thomasa a has been connected with the CHRONICLE and has done everything in her power to tomake tomake tomake make it a bright college paper Much of the best matter in both prose and verse during this time has been of her composition and she has tried hard to get the students to take an interest and to contri contribute This work has never been easy and last year it was especially arduous During last year and the part of this l 4 that h has s passed Miss Thomas has not been a registered student and has not bi if- if f. f i done class work In each case she accepted accepted accepted ac ac- a position on the staff unwillingly unwillingly unwillingly only at the earnest solicitation of the editors She has made no secret whatever of not being registered and both students and professors have known of it Indeed she has not had the faintest idea that there was anything improper in an old student acting on the staff considering her work of sufficient value to pay for the privilege of being in the University building Friday however she was call called d into the Presidents President's Presidents President's den dents dent's t s 's office and informed that she had been taking privileges that she was not entitled to that a bill would probably be pr presented for the tuition of last year and that unless she registered she must wi withdraw w from the CHRONICLE staff An explanation has been given and as we understand it it is this Four years ago the students of the University of Utah were allowed to begin the publication tion of a weekly paper and to use the University's name The representatives of the students or editors were eligible only if registered students of the U Uni Uni- ni- ni Those who founded the CHRONICLE CHRONICLE CHRONICLE CHRON CHRON- ICLE remember no such understanding as this having been either expressed or im im- plied One reason that all on the staff should be registered students is that the has no control over those that are not students and if editors were elected on whom this control could no not be exercised exercised exercised ex ex- the paper might be so managed as to to injure the University Also it jt might that the regents would find out that a person was a member of th the staff and that he did not appear on the books as a student and nd t then en they would demand the ten dollar tuition fee for the person that was published as a student of the U University ty I i I |
