Show UTAH'S FUTURE The ill all Ill Ill-ab topic at present is istah's Utah's taps tap's prospect of becoming a State Everyone everyone whether in favor of Statehood or r opio opposed ed to it see very plainly that it cannot be delayed much longer for each of the great N National parties is desirous of winning vinning over the prospective new States to o its side sid I and as there are aie but few more Territories to be admitted each is very anxious to secure as many of them is as possible We vVe do not know that it makes much difference to Utah which party secures her admission We Ve may rest lest assured in any oase ase that it will not be because of any love for us that either party secures our admission admission admission sion and this is just jus what we would like to o impress upon the minds of the young men nen of Utah Remember that however 1 the he thing turns out we shall owe nothing to o the politicians who have ca carried Tied it or through Whatever they do is for purely selfish elfi h ends enda they have the gains all counted up beforehand and of course couise expect to make Utah a part of the N National National Na Na- a- a spoil We vVe hear it continually asserted asserted asserted as as- by some and tacit tacitly y admitted by hy others that the people of Utah and especially especially espe espe- the young men of Utah have just emerged from political and that henceforth they ai are e to be fi free ee to form their own political opinions to cast their votes as they think right light and to enjoy all the rights lights and privileges of citizens of a free American State We have haye nothing to say sayas as to th the truth or falsity of the above quoted assertions concerning past conditions conditions conditions condi condi- but we have hav a word to say regarding regarding regard regard- ing the future All the fine speeches the political leaders have given us lately flavored as they always are with just a little not little not too much much flattery flattery sound very well but we have only to give conditions outside of Utah a little study to understand stand just what is meant by the political freedom offered us They would make of Utah simply a cog in one or the other of the great political machines which are worked throughout the entire Nation by a few monopolists and political tricksters We vVe need not go beyond the mountains to see how these political machines are worked to see how mens men's votes are controlled just justas as effectually as if they were bought one by one and very much cheaper than as if they were bought in this way Men must live and to live they must work vork and most men will not hesitate long long- when i iu t is a question of selling a vote or seeing their families suffer We say again we owe the politicians nothing b and as for our future it itis is is in in our own own hands Whatever the schemers of to day to day may do the future is ours Let men of Utah look to it No Noone Noone Noone one one of us should join either of the great reat political parties from a feeling of obligation obligation obligation obliga obliga- tion to them for getting Utah admitted into the Union If conditions here are as they say Utah's place is in the Union They have no right to keep her out On th the other hand if conditions are not as they say they are re doing us a grave injustice injustice injustice tice by dragging us into the Union before we we are prepared for it hoping to make us their tools There are many dangers attending Statehood perhaps as grave dangers as those we have escaped Whether we shall be able to gov govern rn or not will depend upon our industry our intelligence intelligence intelligence intelli intelli- gence and our patriotism If f we the people of Utah lack industry we shall I become a bankrupt State if we lack intelligence intelligence intelligence in in- we shall fall a prey to the horde of principled non-principled seekers office-seekers that are sure to to infest our new State if we lack patriotism we will bring upon ourselves ourselves ourselves our our- selves the therum rum ruin that always follows political corruption The persistent diligence of the young men of Utah alone can insUl e h r h-r r future prosperity We owe it to ourselves and to our country that we study diligently existing g conditions and future probabilities Not Utah alone but the Nation Nation at large is approaching a crisis Men statesmen patriots are needed not politicians This we must learn sooner or later the war of American independence must be fought over over and over again till not an injustice remains Our revolutionary fathers did not perhaps more than catch the faintest glimmer of the light that shone upon Americas America's future perhaps we cannot COmprehend comprehend comprehend com COm- it even now but we see it plain to fill our souls with that hi high b love of and equality that is inseparable inseparable arable from love of country thus nerving it us to stand in the breach if need be giving giving- all for our country's welfare holding holding- even life itself not too dear if its sacrifice sacrifice- could make her future more certain |
