S Wallace Critic T The last issue of our paper made an error in speaking of the inaugural address of President McGhie of the Normal So So- It was thought by the editor present that he said devil when in truth he said Delta and we hasten to correct this injustice to a young man of unblemished character and of society in inthe inthe inthe the first ra rank rak k Miss J Noble still holds the fort in the Edina Without entering into the subject subject subject sub sub- of the legality of her election we c can cansay can cansay say that in our opinion the Edina has a good president for the fourth term Miss Noble will keep a cool head and safely ly pilot the society through all discussions We Weare are sorry to learn that several of the best members have resigned An excellent program was rendered last Friday in the Edina Miss Noble the newly elected president gave her inaugural inaugural gural address which was listened to by byall byall byall all with marked attention The thought that it conveyed showed that study and research had prompted her in i its s tion The essay by Miss Brown on the life of Louisa M. J Cannon of Ogden has promised to give his lecture some time during the latter part pait of this month or in the inthe the first part of next Mr Cannon is an old graduate of the University and is a great favorite of the students His ability as a public speaker is too well established to need any mention here Since it was announced announced announced an an- that he would lecture all of the students have looked forward to the time with genuine pleasure We predict the largest audience yet for Mr J Cannon The next meeting of the Mathematical Mathematical'S S 'S Society will be held on Saturday evening April at 30 An excellent has been prepared and those who attend will be amply repaid for their time Prof J. E Moss the question cc Should I any any- process fI in mathematics be taught by rule mechanically Recitations and music sic will fol fol- j low The Th N Normal or l Society held one of their most interesting meetings last List Fri Friday ay 1 I afternoon Mr er sang for forthe forthe I Ithe the society this time and the hearty encore he received showed that his singing was well appreciated The question What is the best method to pursue pursue in order older to get geta a situation after graduating in the theN N Normal ormal department of the University of Utah was answered in a very concise and comprehensive manner by Miss Said Saidie ie Walker Miss J Walker spoke of the characteristics one would be likely to meet with in trustees of both city and country schools and gave some T very y e good hints as to the best way to deal with them The essay on Joys of Memory J by Miss Olga Edholm showed very careful careful careful care care- ful and thoughtful preparation Mr Mi Decker was absent and the society did not have the pleasure of hearing his auto auto- biography Those present indulged in a little of their usual wrangling before the meeting adjourned The Delta Phi society met in room 15 last Monday night as usual and a very interesting program was rendered Mr Roylance's speech on Minority R Representation Representation presentation pre pre- occupied most of the time and proved the speaker to be a person well acquainted with the political institutions of ou our country Minority Representation tion Mr J Roylance said is is a subject that is now receiving considerable attention attention attention atten atten- tion from American thinkers All who have given the subject subject careful thought unite in saying that the right to rule should not be given over entirely to the tre majority They agree in saying that some some system sho should be arranged whereby by he the the intelligent ent upright and honest minorities could b be fairly represented in our government govern govern- ment 1 i t The speaker described the present system o representation f and dwelt at length on the the necessity of of having the minority represented represented represented rep rep- resented in all the matters pertaining to government o He spoke of the feeling of altruism that is becoming so prevalent and showed how a Jair f n of the minority would tend to better the existing existing existing ex ex- conditions Under the present system many intelligent men whose names do not go to swell the majority are kept away from the polls polls' by by the thought that their vote would do no good that the ignorant masses controlled in inmany inmany inmany many cases by a political boss would decide decide decide de de- cide the election any way Give the minority minority minority mi mi- a voice in the government and all allworthy allworthy worthy persons will take an interest in its welfare The speaker used local examples examples exam exam- ples to good advantage in illustrating his points The changes that would result in our own Territory were the minority represented were spoken of for the purpose purpose purpose pur pur- pose of bringing out this point more forcibly Mr Roylance next presen ed and discussed discussed dis dis- cussed the various schemes which have been advanced by eminent sociologists for bringing the desired change about and gave it as his opinion that at least one of these could be adopted without conflicting in any way with the sentiment of the Declaration of Independence Mr Roylance Roylance Roylance Roy- Roy lance has high hopes for the future of politics and ended his interesting lecture by speaking encouragingly of the time when the work of political bosses and campaign schemers will be over After the lecture Mr R. R V.
