strained and every day reconciliation reconciliation seems to become less possible Every nation that ever existed has had to meet the problem of these relations has tried to solve this problem and failing has fallen to ruin luin and decay Leaders of national thought in iii times past however scarcely ever attempted to grapple directly with this problem for their aim was principally to reconcile men mento mento mento to their lot in life without in n any way trying trying trying try try- ing to induce those who dwelt in ignorance ance and poverty to try to better bette their own condition It was perhaps seen as clearly then as now that under a competitive competitive competitive system when any class rises it must be at the expense of some other class and hence doubtless arose the stern resistance which the advancement of knowledge has heretofore met met at every t turn But formerly for for- merly those in power the power the wealthy and intelligent were intelligent were held to some extent responsible responsible responsible re re- for the social conditions existing during their time at any rate posterity holds them responsible and so also will posterity hold the edu educated classes of our day responsible for existing conditions and for those which will rill follow as direct results from existing conditions From the standpoint of modern ethics we can scarcely hold wealth answerable for forthe the existence of poverty ty and its accompanying vice the intellectual classes alone irrespective irrespective irre- irre of financial condition must bear bem this responsibility They alone can in inaugurate inaugurate inaugurate in- in in- in great reforms and beneficent changes they po possess sess a power limited only by the degree of their intelligence and they of all men
