Show We were asked the other day why it is THE CHRONICLE devote more of its editorial space to college sports and athletics why it is so different in this respect respect respect re re- from most other college journals We answer in the first place so far there has been little interest shown by the students students students stu stu- dents here in athletics and sports Certainly Certainly it never ca can be said of the boys of the University of Utah that they are developing developing developing de de- their bodies at the expense of J their minds as as is often said of so many eastern colleges One reason for this lack of interest in athletics is that they are in a measure supplemented by the military drill Of course it is an open question as asto asto asto to whether the drill serves all the purposes ses of physical development but it is an institution of the University and cannot be left out of our calculations Then there is the fact that many of the boys are from the country and are accustomed to putting putting putting put put- ting in every vacation in hard licks on the f farm rm in the mountains or elsewhere andas and andas andas as as many of these are compelled to leave even even before the end of the year they feel that they must employ every moment in study and that time given to athletics would be thrown away But we still have quite a number of young men who reside reside i in the city or neighborhood and who have time for recreation These are the ones who should be interested in ath ath- THE CHRONICLE will do everything everything everything every every- thing possible but at present it can do no nomore nomore nomore more than to try to awaken an interest inthis in inthis inthis this direction What about it boys When are we going to begin |
