Show f U S' c ti f Communications cat ons i P EDITOR CHRONICLE In last weeks week's issue in a communication headed A Talk on Labor there are a number of misleading statements that should in all fairness be corrected In speaking of the trouble between the Ogden Typographical Union and the Standard the correspondent seems to view the matter solely from the standpoint standpoint standpoint stand stand- of the Standard business point management management management manage manage- ment entirely overlooking the fact that there are two sides to every question For instance the statement that the scale of prices for typesetting exacted by hy bythe bythe hythe the Ogden Typographical Union calls for forthe forthe the maximum rate outside of mining towns While this is true yet it is misleading mis- mis leading in that it gives one the idea that the Ogden scale is higher than that of Salt Lake Denver Cheyenne Sacramento Sacramento Sacramento Sacra Sacra- mento or other cities whose position is analogous to that of Ogden The fact is that the scale for morning newspaper work is of of- these the same in all places while the scale scale for other departments of the craft is invariably higher in the cities named than it is in Ogden I As As' for the assertion that the high scale in Ogden enables printers to make from 25 to week I venture the 35 per assertion assertion asser asser- tion that no printer on the Ogden Standard Standard Stand Stand- ard has made 25 per week for three successive weeks since the first paper appeared ap ap- Fe geared red and it is entirely beyond the veil of f possibility that the 35 mark has ever been reached The by any anyone one ave average age of strings of men on the Salt Lake papers is just about ems ems- emsper per night making at 50 cents per th thousand usand the average wages It Itis is is impossible ii- ii that the Standard average can exceed this and the Salt Lake average would I think be a fair estimate for Ogden These figures fig have lave been taken from a close observance of averages and are re re- liable Now when it is taken talen into consideration consideration consideration con con- that the morning n newspaper printer cannot work every night without absolutely ruining his health and that as asa asa asa a consequence he never works over five nights a week and generally not more than four it will he be seen that the high salary attributed to him is ic but a chimera chimer Now as to the so called so-called called hobo and his connection with the trouble Whenever When When- ever any difficulty arises between the Union and an employer and especially any of the nature of the Ogden trouble the only members of the Union who are aie allowed to vote on the proposition are those who have been bona fide members of the local Union for at least six months next preceding As the hobo is thus thus shut out from voting on matters affecting the scale scale- of prices it can readily be seen how much of a figure he cut in theO the O Ogden den matter While it may be possible some of the older members who have families in n Ogden consented to the reduction reduction reduction tion yet the fact of their being overruled by numbers shows that at least oa a majority of the older members of the Ogden Union believed it was not right to allow the scale to be reduced The statement is made that the Standard Standard Stand Stand- ard is running running- behind at the rate of 1000 I per month If this is so it is the fault of the management of the paper paper and not of the men who set the type and so why should the printer be made to suffer for something for which he is not and in the natural order ordel of things cannot be responsible The Union printer as a arule arule arule rule feels kindly toward kindly toward the newspaper that employs h him m and his loyalty to his hise e employer ploy r- r cannot cannot- be questioned S Standing hinding j. j at a case through the weary hours of the i J night when others are sleeping toiling r I t that I t the I great pu public bl IC may I hive have 1 ve t the I news newson newson t. t x on awakening in the morning he feels if f that any attempt at reducing the small stipend stipend sti sti- i- i pend he receives should be opposed and andin andin f in th this belief he is backed up by all of his fellow-craftsmen fellow hence the great power IJ f and nd stability of t the e Typographical Union f f. ct t A UNION PRINTER |
