Show k x It Must Be Abo Abolished has been a slight falling off offin I THERE J- J in attendance this year as compared r with that of last One of the causes of I. I the decreased number of stu students d is IS no doubt the financial stringency but by far farI I r t the h e greater cause is IS t the h e action 0 of f t the h e University authorities themselves For some time it has been felt that the growing growing growing grow- grow ing demands of the preparatory department department department depart depart- ment have been met at the expense of the college proper and that the exigencies exigencies exigencies cies of the situation demand that a reaction reaction reaction re- re action set in Hence the entrance examinations examinations ext ex- ex t to the preparatory department have b been en increased All persons living in Salt Lake who have made application x for admission have been advised to prepare prepare pre pre- f pare themselves for the University at atthe i the high schools and so this department is being more and more subordinated I It is gratifying to note that with the f falling alling off in preps there is is an increased number of students doing regular college work perhaps the largest in the history of the in institution The fitting schools are being brought into a aI I lIW closer union with the University the f R. R High School of this city is satisfactorily doing the work which is done in our preparatory school Our professors are being overworked by having to perform the double duty of fitting students for forthe forthe forthe the college proper and at the same time teaching the collegiate students These considerations forcibly present the question question question ques ques- tion Shall the preparatory department be abolished Just what attention has been paid to this question by the college authorities we do not know It is one however which should be considered at once This Territory is about to become become become be be- come a State it is growing rapidly in wealth and population and despite the prostration of its silver industry it will advance with mighty strides With statehood will come an influx of population population population tion fathers and mot mothers ers will emigrate from the East bringing with them grownup grown grown- up sons and daughters who will want to todo todo todo do work in the University The professors professors professors pro pro- have now all that they can properly do in attending to the wants of the collegiate students The school chool system system system tem of our Territory is is being perfected and the High School of this city is doing doing doing do do- ing good work All these in our opinion demand the prompt abolishment of our preparatory school The two cardinal reasons which have prompted the Regents and Faculty to retain this department are these The students who ho come from the country are almost all aH up grown-up and it would seem unbecoming and undesirable to send them to a high school in company with students of less mature minds The second reason is or rather was that there is not ample means outside of preparing pre pre- paring students for the University courses The first merits no consideration whatever the second can canno canno canno no longer be made When the preparatory preparatory preparatory tory school is abolished all those who go East to attend Eastern universities except of course those in the professional professional professional schools will remain at home With increased numbers in in tie the high schools will come greater efficiency in their work and the employment of better men There is but one solution to this qU question stion and that is that the preparatory preparatory preparatory tory department must be abolished This is the starting point and this is the goal The longer it is deferred the greater will be the exasperation and the themore themore themore more doubtful will be the final result |
