Show i Class Distinctions THE term Class Distinction hardly needs defining everyone knows ws that all persons in life are not of the same station Some are carpenters some builders some miners others are bankers bank bank- t ers lawyers lawTers professors financiers or statesmen All have different tasks some of course requiring more skill than others and therefore receiving a larger remuneration for their services Could it be otherwise Looking a little deeper into the question question question ques ques- tion we will see that class classes s in society are caused by ancestry by wealth and by education Let us take an example of this 1 In nations long established such as England we will see at once a nobility nobility nobility no no- with princes dukes lords and earls These of necessity cause distinct classes in society All those who hold any title must be looked up to and respected and are often regarded with a certain degree of reverence This has been the case for centuries The people have taught their children to reverence the nobility until it is now a part of their very being To meet a prince or duke and not pay him the proper amount of respect means that one will be shunned shunned shunned shun shun- ned as not fit for human society In Inthis Inthis this way where these classes form a apart apart apart part of the government different degrees of society are sure to exist and nought but a change of government can ever alter this aspect of social life b 2 All persons have haye a natural desire to be placed beyond the reach of want t and a great number long to become rich I All have not the ability to keep what wealth they have hav obtained and still get more Some are unfortunate but in 1 tk tl our age and country where opportunities f ties are good all to a greater or less tc extent exten t make money the end of their labors and consequently consequent I y w when h en one is IS f fortunate and accumulates wealth he is looked upon as a hero He is respected and admired not perhaps for his moral qualities but ut simply simply because he le has I. I q tc succeeded in In the race in In which all have lJ apparently entered v 3 All persons are not endowed with r the same powers of body and mindl mind l' l Some take to one thing and some to tor r another Some will spend day and andR R t. t night in a search for gold others labor r t F equally as hard that they may the more ably judge Those of the latter class whether rich or po poor or may become great i if their deter determination in ti n does oes not fa fail l. l X They may attain distinction in In law in In J theology or in science as an inventor Jf c. c or or an author but they will at any rate 5 rise rIse above the great mass of humanity and thus form grades of a higher level Are not all these different levels of society necessary to its existence and andare andare andare are they not the results of natural agencies agencies agencies agen agen- cies Is not the same true in the animal world Look at a herd of sheep f ro Are there not always some that lead the rest here or there as they choose Why q l-q F do you see some sheep in a herd with k bells about their necks Simply because 4 where the bell goes the remainder of the I herd will be found The same is true of man man Take if you choose one hun hun- dred men of equal attainments men equally v. v ell ell educated equally wealthy and with the same prospects before them Leave them thell to themselves for some time and you will see some incline this way and some that way some will become rich others poor some will improve their minds others will squander squander squander der their time and strength in pleasure So it is with society Look at our glorious glorious glorious glor glor- ious nation as she is today Here in America where equality is said to exist where all men are born equal and remain remain remain re re- main equal before the law What do cio dowe dowe we find We have public offices to be filled but are they not filled by mortals In our age and country do not the vast majority of men worship the American Eagle and cannot almost anything be accompli sed by the almighty dollar He who has mon mone money can to a certain extent do as he pleases Bribery is is' isa a violation of law but however honest and just a aman aman aman man may be his moral virtue has a a. a price So much for our laws and human laws will always partake of the same evil Look at American society He who has the means and outside appearances can knock at the door of the most fashionable fashionable fashionable fashion fashion- able circles and it will be opened unto him although thank Providence this is not true here to such an extent as asin asin asin in England where money skillfully handled may obtain titles of nobility Look at Americ Americas America's s 's millionaires Sixty years ago she had none now she has more than any other nation on the earth and still fortunes grow There is is a time in the history of every democratic colony or nation when all may be equal but as the community grows some will excel in one line and and some fail to excel in another some will become become become be be- come rich some remain well-to-do well and others become poor As time rolls on the conditions become more varied and the gulf between the rich and the poor between the educated and the f becomes wider until a stage will willbe willbe willbe be reached that will correspond to the present condition of the United States I It t is only a process of evolution man cannot stop it or tell where it will stop In Jn our own country today the gulf between between between be be- tween the educated and the uneducated is not very wide nor will it become much wider because our common schools are a preventative and also because the educated do not wish to break away from the lower classes They see the necessity of each class they realize the needs of mankind generally and are taught to look upon those who are not educated not as inferiors but only as ones who having had opportunities opportunities opportunities have failed to improve them they look with sympathy realizing the blessings that they are enjoying and feeling for those who have not had the same opportunities On the other hand the gulf between the rich and the poor between the capitalist and the laborer becomes wider each succeeding year We can look at it today we can reflect on the Homestead but what is in the future we have no power to discern The capitalist must be educated to see as the laborers see the laborers must be educated to realize the necessity and sphere of capital and be taught the fact that the two must go hand in hand each working for the good of the other and each always bearing in mind the principle that the greatest good should be done to the greatest number The capitalists must become laborers and the laborers capitalists but that happy day is far off perhaps Mother Earth will never see it but that is the ideal relation of capital and labor What will be the conditions of society in the United States in the future we can only estimate but let us hope that all mankind mankind man man- kind will be raised to a higher level that each may love his neighbor as himself himself him him- self and let those who have positions as leaders remember and practice the sentiment that a heart large enough to enfold all men as brothers is better than gold R.
