Show o 0 The unfortunate sneering attack upon Professor Marshall l of the English department department depart depart- ment in last Tuesdays Tuesday's Herald was absolutely absolute absolute- ly unjustifiable it is little short of an insult and bears out forcibly the truth of some of the professors professor's remarks Mr Marshall was misrepresented and misquoted from beginning beginning begin begin- ning ring to end in that article The writer of it either knew nothing of the lecture or he knew less of the real facts Professor Marshalls Marshall's lecture was one of the regular class room exercises in English I. I In his theme The Magazine l Age he had pointed out the characteristics of present present pres pres- ent nt day periodicals giving in an impartial manner the results of a careful study of the nature and quality of several of the most worthy publications of our time He made madeno no attempt to boost any anyone one work if there were faults in a paper they were pointed out in as straightforward ard a manner as possible After the literary and illustrated magazines had been discussed the various important American weeklies were commented upon and as before the peculiarities and merits were indicated After the weeklies came the dailies which he criticized in a like man man- ner During his talk he severely censured that class of papers which begins its mudslinging mudslinging mudslinging mud- mud slinging as soon as a man holding opposite vi views ws gains any degree of prominence A Aman Aman Aman man cannot rise to prominence in public life said Professor Marshall 1 without being being being be be- ing virtually called a liar a blackguard or ora ora ora a thief by papers of opposite political views What must people think five hundred years from now if their only knowledge of public men is gained solely soley from a file of present day papers Republican papers picture Bryan as an idiot and the Democratic publications publications publications pub pub- insist that Roosevelt is a tyrant whose only interest is a clumsily concealed self The only reference Mr 1 Marshall 1 made to the address of Professor Harger was to mention mention mention men men- tion that his remark touching the kindly and respectful courtesy in journalism was a mere possibility not an actual reality To prove his statement the class was referred to the Salt Lake papers whose courtesy is no no- For further proof the class has exa examined examined ex ex- a nned the Tuesday Herald in which the at attack attack attack at- at tack appeared Scarcely a statement as to what Professor Marshall l is said to have said the implications implications remotely true nor arc even ons of what he meant To make a list of the untruths would take up all of the space of one one issue of the Chronicle It was a mudslinging mudslinging mudslinging mud- mud slinging i insertion with the apparent sole purpose of showing the world how big and bold the paper is what a contemptible pedagogue pedagogue pedagogue gogue Professor 1 Marshall arshall is since he dares to tell the truth without the Heralds Herald's consent consent con coil sent and what a nothing good-for-nothing college the University is for allowing the truth to td tobe tobe be told 1 0 |
