Show I 1,1 1 II . . ... II. - - A Few Suggestions. Cedar City, March 15th . Editor ltecord: Having had tho pleasure of attending tho Horticultural course Riven at the tlmo of tho Farmers Farm-ers Round-up at tho Agricultural Col-lego Col-lego last winter, I thought porhapj a few suggestions would bo appreciated by all fruit growers. Last year wo woro favored with a good crop, but with propor caro and attention at-tention It could havo boon greatly Improved. Im-proved. Apples wero'notna wormy as wp can look for thorn to bo this year, unless tho propor precautions are taken. tak-en. There having been no fruit for several years previous to Inst year, thore would nuturnlly bo fewer worms, but look out for thomvthts year If wo aro so fortunate as to havo fruit. Now is tho tlmo to make ready. When the tlmo comes to spray you should havo a good barrel spray and accompanying ' fixtures to do your work. To do good work tho treo should bo trimmed so that tho spray could bo driven Into tho calyx of ovory blossom, for that Is tho placo whoro four-llfths of tho first brood of Worms get into 'tho apple. Kill tho first brood and you will have no second. Clean all dcud bark from tho trunk of tho treo, and clean up and burn all rubbish from around them. By doing this many worms can bo killed. Ono destroyed In early spring prevents breeding of many in suramor. To got tho best results wo should keep our trees woll trimmed. I don't mean to keop them chopped down. If a treo Ib so largo and old you havo to lako an ax and ripsaw to It, start on the roots first. That is tho answer I rccoived to tho Question of how to prune such a treo. A pruning saw is an indespenslblo nrtlclo around trees. If a treo Is overloaded with either Ilmb9 or fruit tho owner looses In quality, qual-ity, uniformity of color, of sizo and flavor of his fruit. If you havo not trimmed you will no doubt find it profitable prof-itable to do so immediately. To cut tho tops off applo trees means many water shoots, which aro of little value. Tho main points in pruning is to havo tho treo as low as posslblo, woll spread, with nnoven balance, centers cut out to get all tho'sun posslblo. My attention has been called to several sev-eral undesirable conditions. I found ono treo very badly Infected with with crown gall, which if not destroyed will endanger other troes. A friend called my attontlon to a couplo of young troes that died lust year which was undoubtedly duo to the applo treo borer. Ho will loso oth-ess oth-ess If tho propor precautions are not takon. No doubt all havo noticed how bad ourtreosaro becoming Infeoted with tho woolly aphis, This is easily handled. hand-led. Scrapo dirt from around crown of treo for about two feet out along main roots. Take a good tobacco sheep dip, mix It with warm water, about throe times as strong as recommended for sheep dipping and pour In around tho tree, saturating It woll. Horticultural inspectors aro to help, not hinder tho fruit Industry, so if you havo trouble with your trees lot us help you. The fruit Industry is growing grow-ing very rapidly practically all over tho stato and I see no reason why Iron County cannot make It a prlnclplo business If lato and Improved methods were adopted, for we can ralso as good fruit hero as can bo raised anywhoro.
