IL -Clark of Baker City, Ore, with his wlfo, arrived in Goldflcld Thursday and brought a story of death on tho lower desert seldom equalled. Ho says that a party of prospectors crossing tho edgo of Death valley, laying lay-ing between tho Panamlnt and Funeral ranges of mountains, camo across a ' i i party of nlno mon and thrco burros. Seven of tho men and all the burroa wero dead. The two survivors wore In a pitiable pitia-ble condition. Their tongues wero swollen so that thoy protruded from tholr mouths, and tho action of tha heat had so stlffoned their limbs that thoy had to bo carried on the backs of tho rescuers' anlmnls. No dotnlls can bo obtained at present, pres-ent, ns it Is doubtful If the two men rescued can live. Tho bodies of the dead wero pnrtlally covered by sand and recognition wns impossible. Tho burros lay dead with their packs strapped to them, nnd It Is certain that tho party had becomo lost, and In their vain search for water In that dry alkali stretch of desert had traveled In a clr-clo clr-clo until overcome by thirst and heat, and then laid down and died. |
