For over forty years one of the best, known characters in Cedar city hns been "Niels" ns ho was universally styled by those who knew him. Few, indeed, aro the public gatherings gath-erings of nny sort that have convened In the city during that period that were lacking his presence. It is not necessary neces-sary to say thnt "Niels" wns not in possession of ns great n degree of Intelligence In-telligence as ths.nverage of our race, as tho fact was apparent on vtry slight acquaintance, but that he wns entirely harmless was also just as plain (q bu seen. He was often teased by thoughtless thought-less or mlschlevlous boys, on which occasions oc-casions he was in the habit of resent-lug resent-lug their behavior in a comparatively mild manner, to their evident amusement. It is said that until ho was two yeare old he wns a remarkably bright, Intelligent Intel-ligent child, but at that period of his life ho wns taken with somo complaint which affected his brain, and from the effects of which he never recovered. Although lacking In intellect he made a better use of what,ho did have than many people who were better off In that respect. He was one of the most faithful deacons'thnt tho church has ever had, as far as Ills ability extended, and In many ways made himself useful. The care of him has devolyed upon Mr. llengt Nelson and wife of this city, and great credit is duo to them for tho eflllelent and thorough manner In which they havo'dlscharged the obligation, obliga-tion, However, "no one who knows them would expect anything else from them.
