Show A New Year's Message. Among the messages of hope and cheer published in the Salt Lake Herald Her-ald on New Year's day from Salt Lake's ministers was the following from Rev. Father Kiely, vicar general of the diocese of Salt Lake: "Vale to the old, Ave to the New-Year. New-Year. . - "As the ringing bells of 12 o'clock midnight TuesdAY reverberated through the world, another year had passed into memory and into the bosom of God that made it. But, as if to compensate! humanity for the lapse of time aitd to mellow the reverses of shattered hopes and dreams, a virgin year is sent from heaven that mankind may make a new start, take a fresh lease of life and rise more bravely from former failures. "Since 1907 first began many friends and bosom relatives of the hearthstone are resting in their dreamless sleep, their dirge forever played by wintry wind or summer zephyr. They should not be forgotten. The memory of their former words and smiles will make us better men and womn. To them is due the benediction of prayer that they may rest in peace. "Nineteen hundred and seven has been marked by many troubles, due chiefly to a materialistic conception of life. Men and women fail to give their hearts to God, to pray often and sincerely. sin-cerely. 'The last part of the old year Witnessed a national panic that caused great distress. It is no superstition to say that God chasises nations as well as individuals, and the panic may be considered a warning from the .Almighty .Al-mighty in order to call people back from placing entire faith in material happiness and earthly nursu'ts. "The American people have good reason rea-son to look forward to 1908 with cheerful cheer-ful minus. Continual exposure of corruption cor-ruption is making our politics purer, the Christian religion is beginning to acquire that dominion in daily life so necessary to happiness and the nobler existence. "Catholicity, too; is finding favor from many who formerly opposed it. In the steady progress and enlightenment enlighten-ment of the human race we observe God's promise verified: 'I will be with you all the days, even to the consummation consum-mation of the world.' "In spite of all evil forces, good will ultimately conquer. The clouds may obscure the sun temponmiy, but they cannot prevent that king of hoavenly orbs from ascending his throne at the birth of every dawn, causing the green things of the earth to 11 ur:sh and making glad the hearts of tiie children of men.
